history
While the present-day villages of Illmensee, Illwangen and Ruschweiler are all foundations from the expansion period , the shallow water zones of the lakes were already settlements in the Neolithic Age . The Pfyn-Altheimer group (4000 to 3500 BC) and the Horgen culture (3000 to 2500 BC ) at the Illmensee can be verified by ceramic finds at the Ruschweiler See .
An artificial dam and the homestead name "Weiher" or "Weiherhöfe", west of Illmensee and south of Volzen, as well as "Krumbach" provide information about the role that fish farming and fishing have played on Andelsbach and Krumbach since the Middle Ages. The villages were located in the county of Heiligenberg until mediatization and became part of the Grand Duchy of Baden in the 19th century . From 1939 to 1972 the places were assigned to the district of Überlingen .
As part of the regional reform in Baden-Württemberg on September 1, 1971, the two communities Illwangen and Ruschweiler were incorporated into Illmensee. After the formation of the new Wilhelmsdorf community on January 1, 1973, the Baden districts of Höhreute (with the farms Sack and Wanne ), Niederweiler and Tafern , which were formerly part of the Illwangen community, were assigned to the new Wilhelmsdorf community and thus to the Ravensburg district with effect from May 1, 1973 .
Illmensee came to the district of Sigmaringen through the district reform in 1973 .

Buildings
- The Catholic parish church of the Assumption of Mary in Illmensee shows stylistic means of the late Gothic and dates in its present form from 1860. The altar leaves are by the well-known Swiss church painter Melchior Paul von Deschwanden .
- The Vitus Chapel , a path chapel donated in 1611, is located in the hamlet of Krumbach .
- The Chapel of St. Martin is located in the Judentenberg district, a chapel that was first mentioned around 1051 and is in the late Gothic style. The frescoes date from the 14th century and the pews from the 16th century.
- The Catholic Loretto Chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary is located in the hamlet of Mariahof near Illwangen . In the context of the counter-Reformation Loretto cult during and in the decades after the Thirty Years' War, the chapel, built in 1670 in Illwangen, a suburb of Fürstenberg at the time, goes back to a foundation of the wealthy Salemian feudal farmer Blasius Fetscher on the grounds of his court. However, according to the will of the founder, which was not documented until 1727, masses for the salvation of the Fetscher family are to be celebrated regularly in the chapel, the pilgrims for the rapidly blossoming Marian pilgrimage await bread and wine as a strengthening and should distribute the foundation surpluses to the poor and sick in the area. While the pointed arch and the barrel vault refer to earlier art epochs, the interior shows itself in a simple baroque robe. An expressive crucifixion group, probably from the 18th century, has been preserved from the original furnishings of the chapel.
- In Ruschweiler there is a chapel of the Catholic parish of Illmensee-Ruschweiler, which was built in 1908 and consecrated to the "Maria, Mother of Perpetual Help" and has been available for Protestant services for years.
- The St. Michaels Chapel from 1908 is located in Neubrunn .
- Around 500 meters southwest of the Illmenseer district of Lichtenegg there are small remains of the wall of the high medieval Alt-Lichtenegg castle in the spur . The late medieval Neu-Lichtenegg castle , from which remains of moats have been preserved, was also located around 300 meters west of the village .
- In the direction of Birkhof there is a stone that is maintained as a war memorial together with the city of Illmensee in Russia.
- Two out of three farms belonging to the Pfullendorf Spitalfonds are located in the Illmensee district. The Hofgut Lichtenegg is the second largest hospital estate with 67.6 hectares. It has been owned by the hospital fund since 1412 and is leased. The Hofgut Mariahof has belonged to the Spitalfonds since 1899. With 68.55 hectares, it is the largest Hofgut owned by the Spitalfonds. Another hospital estate is located in Wattenreute .
Others
- The “hydrant hiking trail” is unique in Germany: hydrants painted by artists represent figures that lead hikers on two different routes through the community. The southern route is five kilometers long. It leads from Illmensee to Illwangen and back on the banks of the Illmensee. On this route, for example, a teacher, a colorful clown, a police officer, a pirate as well as grandma and grandpa are posted. The northern route - around eight kilometers long - leads from Ruschweiler via Judentenberg back to Ruschweiler. Here you can meet sporty racing drivers, Indians, forest witches, hunters and riders, for example.
- From the lookout point at the Höchst , a wooden pavilion, you have a good view of the Lake Constance region and the Alpine chain from Zugspitze to the Bernese Oberland when the view is clear. In a cloudless night, the scattered light of the surrounding cities is so low at this altitude that stars can be seen very well from here. From the lookout point, the “Swabian-Alemannic dialect path ” , a circular route showing sculptures and panels with typical Swabian-Alemannic idioms, leads 200 meters to the mountain inn Höchst and back again.
Sports
The Stoppomat , the first permanent system for cycling mountain time trials in Germany, is located in the municipality . The facility is at the highest point , which at 833 meters is the highest point in the Lake Constance area . The destination station is 830 m above sea level. NN at the Glashütten district.
