Cheaper by the dozen 2 - Two fathers go crazy

Cheaper by the Dozen is an American comedy film from 2003 . It is vaguely based on the memory book of the same name by Frank Bunker Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey , the children of Frank Bunker Gilbreth , which Walter Lang filmed with Clifton Webb and Myrna Loy under the same title in 1950 . The remake with Steve Martin was particularly successful in the United States, which led to a sequel in 2005 entitled Cheaper by the Dozen 2 - Two Fathers . In Europe, however, the film by director Shawn Levy only attracted a few visitors to the cinemas.

action

Tom and Kate Baker decided 23 years ago that they would have eight children. It turned out to be twelve. The extended family lives in the country where Tom trains the local college football team. Kate has quit her job as a sports journalist. One day Tom gets the dream offer to become a coach of the “Stallions”. For this the family has to go to Chicago , which bothers the children. Nevertheless, Tom and Kate finally manage to move with them. But Kate has to do a promotional tour for her new book (which is called " Cheaper By The Dozen ") across the States. The first time Tom is alone with his children.

The situation is getting worse. Still, Tom manages to achieve success with his football team and keeps telling Kate on the phone that everything is under control. The children don't see it that way, however, and chaos rages at home. Finally, alarmed by the children, Kate breaks off her trip. When a child runs away, Tom makes his decision and ends his career as football coach for the "Stallions". Kate's book has been on the bestseller list for twelve months, Tom declines twelve job offers until he gets one that allows him to spend more time with the family, and they celebrate Christmas together again - as much as possible - as a harmoniously united family.

criticism

"Remake of the popular Hollywood comedy of the same name by Walter Lang from 1950, which is tailored to its hyperactive, wildly grimacing leading actor and ultimately only promotes slapstick comedy."

“Anyone who wants to be showered with shallow comedy for an hour and a half should buy a cinema ticket for“ Cheaper by the dozen ”. Everyone else should steer clear of the film. Director Shawn Levy (“ Fully Married ”) is not even to blame for this. He definitely didn't want to make more than a nice, harmless entertainment film. "

"[...] Shawn Levy's film is selected mediocrity and continues the series of those slack family films with which old comedian Steve Martin only briefly remembers himself, not just since last year's house overhead ."

“Steve Martin is obviously having fun playing the tamer of the children's gang in this film. "Cheaper by the dozen" turned out to be a nice family film, but unfortunately it doesn't make enough of its possibilities. It's hilarious when the whole family smears their sandwiches in the kitchen as they've been rehearsed in the early morning and skis on them. Why aren't there more scenes like this? They would have made the flick a real hit. So it just remains a smirk. "

“The remake does not come close to the original (50). As the title suggests: dozen items. "
