Johnny English - The Spy Who it versiebte is a comedy by Peter Howitt from the year 2003 . The film parodies the James Bond films. The main actor Rowan Atkinson is best known for the comedy series Mr. Bean .

action

Johnny English, a small clerk in the British secret service and only daydreaming himself a star agent, causes the death of star agent Agent One due to wrong codes. At the funeral, at which English and his assistant Bough ensure safety, all remaining agents and candidates are killed in an explosives attack.

After that, the secret service's only remaining agent is the stupid candidate English, who fails on his first assignment, namely to protect the crown jewels that have been brought back to the Tower of London after a restoration . Behind this theft is the Frenchman Pascal Sauvage, who is related to the British royal family. Since Sauvage is a friend of Pegasus, the chief of intelligence, and has restored the crown jewels at his own expense, he enjoys Pegasus' complete confidence. When English has worked a little more into the matter, the group of suspects is reduced to two people: Sauvage and the double agent Lorna Campbell. He confronts Pegasus with his suspicions about Pascal Sauvage, but is rejected by Pegasus and is asked to exclude him from the investigation immediately.

English decides in the course of his "investigation" to break into Pascal's office. He uses the opportunity of a party organized by Sauvage. Unfortunately, his parachute jump leads to the roof of the neighboring, similar-looking city hospital. After Bough picks him up from there, the break-in into Sauvage's office can begin, but they are noticed. In addition, Johnny English swapped his special combat seal rings so that a security guard received a truth serum and Sauvage's henchman Klein and English himself received a muscle relaxant and could barely move. You can still escape to the party hosted by Sauvage when Sauvage is informed of the break-in. Sauvage then informs Pegasus, which in turn suspends English with immediate effect and sets three months' compulsory leave. After that, English is to return to his old post. For English, Sauvage still remains the prime suspect.

Lorna Campbell has been assigned to pursue the case, but does not want to do without English's help. The two agents are able to follow up Sauvage's lead and even find evidence: Sauvage wants to be crowned King of Great Britain and has (by threatening one of her beloved corgis with a gun) blackmailed the Queen to sign a deed of abdication in which she and all of them Family renounce the claim to the throne. Subsequently, Sauvage wants to convert what in his eyes is already uncivilized Great Britain into a huge prison.

On the day of the coronation everything goes as usual until Johnny disrupts the ceremony. Although his revelations in front of a large audience are initially unsuccessful, as a result of some mix-ups, his allegations are all baseless, while Lorna fights unnoticed with Klein, who is supposed to shoot English. But he can at least prove Sauvage's lousy character when he points a pistol at English. After a chain of coincidences, English is crowned in place of Sauvage and the only official act ordered is his arrest. Then he renounces the throne in favor of the original queen. He is returned to active service and knighted by the Queen at his personal request. Sauvage is charged with high treason. At the end, English meets with Lorna in the south of France, but right before the kiss he accidentally activates her ejector seat.

background

Many elements of the film come from the James Bond series: The subtitle of the film, created by the German distributor, is an allusion to the film The Spy Who Loved Me . The secret agent drives, like Bond, an Aston Martin equipped with many extras , he is involved in chases and shootings and storms enemy quarters, even as a parachutist. An attractive woman is also at his side.

Towards the end, English tries to unmask a supposed doppelganger of the Archbishop of Canterbury by tattooing his buttocks by pulling his pants down in front of the cameras. This scene is very similar to the comedy Die Nackte Kanone 2½ .

Pascal Sauvage evidently justifies his claim to the throne through a relationship to Charles Edward Stuart , since a portrait of him hangs in his office and the family tree, which he shows elsewhere, also bears the names of the respective nobility. Stuart was a descendant of Maria Stuart , the Catholic rival of Elizabeth I , and on behalf of his family the so-called Jacobite uprisings took place in England and Scotland in the 18th century, which were unsuccessful, but in Charles' case led to the fact that Among other things, the traditional Scottish way of life including clans and tartans was banned and actively persecuted by the English.

Reviews

“Turbulent balancing act between action-oriented espionage thriller and black agent film satirical, entertaining especially through its main actor. The weak script of course produces too much idle time, which should be masked with a few fecal-rich wooden hammer gags. "

"If Johnny English is the low point of the series, it is because he lacks any original ideas, and instead the film exposes all that supposed British to the ridicule that has served up countless times."

“What might work as a short film, however, has its lengths as full-length entertainment. Lots of jokes stay lukewarm, some are simply unsavory. "

“Even if the film partly uses genre-related models such as The Naked Gun , you have to admit that it knows how to entertain its audience. All in all, Johnny English offers almost 90 minutes of easy, light entertainment, which is sure to please even those who find uncomfortable "Mr. Bean" warm. "

- moviemaze.de

“He (Rowan Atkinson) had 007 specialists Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (“ The world is not enough ”) do a witty mix of“ Mr. Bean ”,“ Die Nackte Kanone ”- and“ Austin Powers ”slapstick, seasoned with a pinch of“ Black Adder ”malice. [...] It's not always original. But thanks to Atkinson and his famous rubber disc, weird to the point of pain. "

"World-class comedian Atkinson treats the laughing muscles to the point of sore muscles with a constant dose of humor - sometimes hearty and violent, sometimes" very British ". After "Austin Powers" and "The Naked Cannon" a new and mercilessly funny joke. "
