action

After his retirement, the former MI7 agent Johnny English works in a school as a geography teacher, but teaches his students all kinds of spy tricks. MI7 is meanwhile the victim of a hacker attack in which the identities of all undercover agents of the secret service are published. In order to find the culprit, the Prime Minister decides to recruit former agents, including English. During the signing of the contract, he inadvertently incapacitates all other agents, which is why he is assigned to the case alone. English wants his former colleague Bough to support him, whereupon the two travel together to the south of France, where a hotel is suspected to be the source of the hacker attack.

After stealing a suspect's cell phone, but setting the hotel's restaurant on fire, they see a photo that a yacht was anchored near the hotel at the time of the crime. English and Bough decide to get on the boat, but are noticed and provided by Ophelia Bhuletova. After the two were locked in a room, but were able to free themselves with the help of an explosive cotton swab, they enter the server room, where they left a tracking device, and then flee from the yacht. The next day they watch Ophelia come ashore and decide to follow her.

After a chase that ends up running out of gas for Bough and English, the latter and Ophelia arrange an evening meeting at a hotel bar. Ophelia, who is actually a Russian spy, discovers that English must be a professional agent, and she receives an order from her government to eliminate him. However, her attempts to shoot English or kill him with a choke wire fail, whereupon she is overwhelmed by him. In the meantime, Bough worked with MI7 to find out who the yacht actually belongs to: Jason Volta, a Silicon Valley billionaire who is trying to sign a contract with the British Prime Minister for the upcoming G12 summit.

The next morning, English and Bough drive back to England and inform Pegasus that Volta is behind the hacker attacks and cyberattacks that have increased in the past few days. However, Pegasus demands solid evidence, which is why the two agents decide to break into Volta's villa. As a training for this, English is supposed to practice the operation with a computer simulation and virtual reality glasses, but does a lot of damage in the city and causes chaos. In Volta's house he finally meets Ophelia, who informs him that she is a Russian spy and that she has been undercover investigating Volta for two years by having a relationship with him. When they find out about Volta's plans and English secretly filmed them, the two are discovered, although Ophelia pretends to have caught English. He escapes from the property with the footage and drives to the Prime Minister with a learner driver. There he wants to show her the evidence, but has previously swapped his cell phone with that of the learner driver, which is why the Prime Minister suspended him from duty.

However, Bough encourages English to continue cracking down on Volta. So the two decide to drive to the castle, where the G12 summit is to take place. There, Volta blackmailed the heads of state of the participating states by using the servers on his yacht to turn off the electricity and the Internet throughout Europe. In return for the reversal, he demands that they should provide him with all the data from their respective countries and that he thus get more power. But English, Bough and Ophelia, who was previously exposed by Volta, manage to steer a missile that was fired from a submarine under the command of Bough's wife onto the hidden tracking device in the yacht. The boat is destroyed, the electricity and the internet are switched on again and Volta is arrested by English. Later he returns to his job at school, where he is celebrated as a hero by his students.

Reviews

The film has so far won over 36% of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes and received a Metascore of 39 out of 100 possible points on Metacritic .

Antje Wessels from Filmstarts sees the best part of the series in Johnny English - You Only Live Three Times, not least because David Kerr and William Davies finally showed respect for the main character. Above all, care was taken not to conceive a plot in which one simply wanted to combine “wild slapstick escapades”, as was the case in the first two parts. Rather, the "story about the hacker attack [...] seems fresh and up to date". The skillful play with old-fashioned Johnny English and the globally networked world would create some outstanding comedy moments, in which the good timing and the precise staging were particularly positive. In addition to the comedy, however, Kerr does not neglect the "agent skills of his main character", so that Johnny English becomes a very capable investigator and no longer defines himself only by his clumsiness. Other positive aspects that Wessels mentions are the cleanly executed effects and the consistently solid representations of the actors.

The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw thinks there are some great moments in Johnny English - You Only Live Three Times. However, the big point of criticism of this film is the humor, which is very childish and no longer as imaginative and pointed as that of Atkinson's star role, Mr. Bean . In addition, the jokes felt a bit out of place because even spy films like James Bond or Mission Impossible that Johnny English tried to parody were now using them. Rowan Atkinson and Ben Miller , who are like Batman and Robin in this film , pull out all the stops especially towards the end, but as amiable and exuberant as it is, it remains too childish. Emma Thompson, on the other hand, makes the best of her role, which does not give much, and is a "Quasi- Theresa-May ". Also, Olga Kurylenko , a "beautiful femme fatale embodies" is highlighted positive. In conclusion, Bradshaw draws that Atkinson's comedic talent can be seen on screen, but his role does not really do justice to it.

In contrast to Bradshaw, Andreas Günther from the Mittelbayerische Zeitung praises the film's humor and compares it with the “great works by Gérard Oury with Louis de Funès ”. Johnny English - You Only Live Three Times is an excellent example of a “concept comedy” and hits the audience's diaphragm directly. Like Antje Wessels, he praises the clash of the analogue and digital world, which leads to a creative spark, "in which the actor, screenplay and director ignite long fuses to visual punch lines". At the same time, however, the film never goes below the belt. In comparison with the previous films, Günther draws the conclusion that the film leaves them far behind due to the consistency of the procedure.

The German Film and Media Assessment (FBW) in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title “particularly valuable”.

Gross profit

On the opening weekend, Johnny English - You only live three times with 225,000 visitors reached number 1 on the German cinema charts, while in the second week it slipped to number 2 on the cinema charts. In total, it was able to record 973,452 moviegoers in this country and bring in 7.65 million euros. The production costs of around 25 million US dollars are offset by worldwide revenues of 158.97 million US dollars, of which the film grossed 4.41 million in North America. The film series thus achieved almost the same box office results three times in a row.
