Juan Sebastián "Bruja" Verón (born March 9, 1975 in La Plata ) is a former Argentine football player with an Italian passport and son of Juan Ramón Verón .

Career

Verón started his career as a professional footballer in Argentina with the Estudiantes de La Plata football club , after which he played for the Boca Juniors .

For the 1996/97 season he then moved to Europe, where he was obliged by the Italian club Sampdoria Genoa . After two years he moved to AC Parma for around 17 million euros , where he only played one season but was able to win the Italian Cup and the UEFA Cup . At the end of 1999 he left the club and moved to Lazio Rome for a transfer fee of 30 million euros , where he probably played his best football and was instrumental in helping Lazio win the championship , the cup and the Supercup in 2000 .

After a total of five seasons, Verón left Italy and moved to Manchester United for almost 43 million euros . After two years with the Red Devils, he was signed by Chelsea for around 22 million euros. However, Verón only played a handful of games for Chelsea. Overall, his time in England is to be assessed negatively, as he could not meet the expectations placed in him at either Manchester or Chelsea. Due to the high transfer fees that were paid for him, he is considered a transfer flop at both clubs.

After the 2003/04 season he went back to Italy on loan to Inter Milan . There Verón was able to improve again and win some titles with Inter. In the match for the Italian Supercup 2005 against Juventus Turin he scored the only goal of the game. In the summer of 2005 he finally signed with Inter until 2007.

However, he returned to South America in 2006 and moved to his home in Argentina: Verón signed with his youth club Estudiantes de La Plata . In the same year he was named Argentina's Footballer of the Year.

In 2008 Verón reached the final of the Copa Sudamericana , the South American edition of the Europa League, with his club . However, Estudiantes had to admit defeat to SC Internacional . In return, Verón won the Copa Libertadores , the South American version of the Champions League, with Estudiantes the following year . Verón was chosen as the best player of the finals. Before that, the Estudiantes fans had to wait 39 years for this trophy - Verón's father Juan Ramón Verón was still in the squad of the Argentine club at the last triumph .

Thanks to this success, Estudiantes qualified for the 2009 FIFA Club World Cup . There Verón reached the final with his club, where the Argentine team lost out to FC Barcelona . Verón was voted the tournament's second best player behind Lionel Messi .

In 2008 and 2009 Verón was also able to prevail in the vote of the Uruguayan newspaper El País as South America's Player of the Year. Pelé put him on the list of the 125 best footballers alive ( FIFA 100 ) in 2004 .

In October 2011, Verón announced that he would end his active career at the end of the year. However, he also ran for Estudiantes in 2012.

At the end of the 2011/12 season, Verón announced his retirement and became sports director at Estudiantes de La Plata . On July 19, 2013, he announced his comeback as a playing sports director at Estudiantes de La Plata.

After playing his last game for Estudiantes de La Plata on May 18, 2014 against Tigres and taking over the presidency of the club around five months later, the club announced at the end of December 2016 that Verón, who is still club president, had a one and a half year contract I signed the term as a player. He was featured in five Copa Libertadores games and retired in late May 2017.

Play style

Verón mostly acted as a playmaker, but could also be used in the right and left half positions in midfield. He had a hard, well-placed shot and a good overview, which he demonstrated both with his passing strength and his tactical skills on the defensive.
