action

In the distant future, the earth will be largely devastated by unrest and war. The people have withdrawn into a few metropolises of gigantic proportions, the so-called mega cities. The largest of them is Mega City One, a city full of corruption and crime that is hidden behind an insurmountable protective wall. The law is upheld by the Judges, an elite police government. Their agents, the street judges, are policemen , judges and executioners rolled into one.

The most famous of all street judges is Joseph Dredd, who firmly believes in the law and often imposes draconian penalties even for minor crimes . So it happens that he unceremoniously blows up a traffic offender's car with a grenade. His younger colleague, Judge Hershey, cannot approve of such exaggerated harshness and misses emotional depth in Dredd. Yet she is just as shocked as Dredd himself when he is accused one day of the murder of the famous reporter Vardas Hammond and his wife.

Dredd is convicted based on his genetic fingerprint on the bullets that were found at the scene. Only the decision of his mentor, the old Chief Justice Fargo, to step down and, as the last official act, to mitigate Dredd's sentence, saves him from the death penalty . Fargo goes into exile, to the withered lands beyond the city walls. Dredd's prisoner transport, on which he met the small crook Herman "Fergie" Ferguson, who had recently been convicted by him, is shot down over the desert. Only Fergie and Dredd survive the crash, but face a small family of mutated, god-fearing cannibals who want to plunder the transport as a source of food. Dredd can defeat them after an exhausting fight and with the help of the suddenly appearing Fargo. From Fargo Dredd learns the truth about his origins. It is the result of a genetic experiment with the aim of creating a perfect, absolutely good person. In the attempt, however, two children emerged: Joseph, who combined all the good qualities in himself, and his brother Rico, in whom the bad traits manifested themselves. Without knowing it, Judge had once convicted his own brother, ex-Street Judge Rico.

Rico is back now. The opportunistic Judge Griffin used it to kill Hammond, who learned the truth about the project, while getting Dredd and Fargo out of the way. He is now the new Chief Justice and is preparing to breed an entire army of genetically optimized supermen as street judges. However, he is betrayed by Rico who kills him and then creates clones with his DNA to take power in Mega City One.

Dredd, who returns to town with Fergie after Fargo's death, takes on Rico with Hershey's help. A merciless duel ensues between the brothers, which ends on the Statue of Liberty , which has now been placed on a skyscraper . Dredd can ultimately defeat Rico and is celebrated by the crowd, they want to appoint him as the new Chief Justice. However, he insists on resuming his street judge service. Before that, however, he finally shows feelings for Hershey, who says goodbye to him with a hearty kiss.

criticism

The film received rather negative reviews overall. Even the release was under a bad star, as director Cannon and lead actor Stallone had constantly argued over the script. Cannon later stated that some of the film's weakest scenes were due to changes that Stallone insisted on.

The lexicon of international films rated the film as “a conventional fantasy story with an extraordinary futuristic city design, but whose pre-fascist leader ideology is questionable”.

Cinema saw "great design, crazy tricks and a good dose of black humor" and rated the film as "speech bubble action with popcorn appeal".

Awards

  • The film was nominated for the Saturn Award in 1996 in the categories of best science fiction film , best special effects , best make-up and best costumes .
  • Sylvester Stallone was nominated for the worst actor in the year of publication for the Golden Raspberry .
  • The readers of Cinema magazine voted the film in the 1996 Jupiter election as the biggest flop of the previous year.

Remake

In 2012, a remake called Dredd hit theaters. This sticks more to the comic series and has almost nothing in common with the Stallone version. Karl Urban , who took on the title role, confirmed in an interview that he won't take off his helmet in the film because the cartoon character doesn't either. The villains are played by Wood Harris as Kay and Ma-Ma is played by Lena Headey . Originally, source code director Duncan Jones was intended to direct the film, but he had his own idea for a film adaptation and therefore declined. Pete Travis stepped in for him.
