Kano is a federal state in the West African country of Nigeria . The capital of the same name, Kano, is the largest city in the state with 3,626,204 inhabitants (2005).

geography

The state is located in the north of the country and is bordered to the northwest by the state of Katsina , to the northeast by the state of Jigawa , to the southwest by the state of Kaduna and to the southeast by the state of Bauchi .

population

The official language of Kano State is English . However, Haussa is more widespread as a colloquial language among the population and is also understood by more residents of Kano.

According to the latest Nigerian government census, Kano state has a total population of 9,383,682 people. Gani Fawehinmi , a lawyer and activist from Lagos , has questioned the credibility of this result . The state is mostly populated by the Haussa people. The vast majority of the population is Sunni - Muslim . Therefore, Kano officially introduced Sharia , Islamic law, as the source of legislation.

According to estimates, the population in 2016 was 13,076,900, making Kano the most populous state in the country.

Healthcare

The massive incidence of diseases such as cholera and meningitis is also new . No improvements have been made to the open sewer system in years , and the unsanitary conditions associated with it encourage the spread of epidemics. Vaccinations carried out by the WHO were partly boycotted by Islamist clergymen . Sometimes it is even said that the US should make the population sterile.

The state was formed on May 27, 1967. The first governor was Abdu Bako between May 28, 1967 and July 1975. Ibrahim Shekarau has been the current governor since May 29, 2003 .

The recent history of the city of Kano and its region has been marked by violence between Christian and Muslim populations. The state has been subject to Sharia law since 2000 . Since then, Kano has been considered a center of Islamism . Non-Muslims , especially Christians, are systematically oppressed and exposed to previously unknown dangers. There are also evictions. Since 2007 Christian pupils at private schools have also had to submit to the Islamic dress code and wear the veil.

These are: Ajingi, Albasu, Bagwai, Bebeji, Bichi, Bunkere, Dala, Dambatta, Dawakin-Kudu, Dawakin-Tofa, Doguwa, Fagge, Gabasawa, Garko, Garum-Mallam, Gaya, Gazewa, Gwale, Gwarzo, Kabo, Kano Municipal, Karaye, Kibiya, Kiru, Kumbotso, Kunchi, Kura, Madobi, Makoda, Minjibir, Nassarawa, Rano, Rimin-Gado, Rogo, Shanono, Sumaila, Takai, Tarauni, Tofa, Tsanyawa, Tudun-Wada, Ungongo, Warawa and Wudil.

Major industries in the state are trade and agriculture . There are peanuts harvested and minerals mined. In total, more than three million hectares of land are cultivated. There are dozens of dams in the state . Including Challawa Gorge and Tiga Damm, two of the most ambitious irrigation projects in West Africa . These enable year-round cultivation of the soil.
