Kevin-Okyere Weidlich (born October 4, 1989 in Hamburg ) is a German - Ghanaian football player on the position of midfielder . Unlike his older brother Denis , he found his way into professional football late through amateur sport.

Career

Career start in Hamburg

Kevin-Okyere Weidlich was born on October 4, 1989 in the Hanseatic city of Hamburg as the son of Ghanaian immigrants who found their way to Germany in the 1980s. Here he went through all the youth teams at various Hamburg clubs. From 1994 to 2000 he belonged to the SC Urania Hamburg , followed by the SC Concordia Hamburg from 2000 to 2002. In that year he made the leap into the youth of the larger FC St. Pauli , whose first team had just suffered a descent into amateur football and was in a form low in the early 2000s. At the Kiezkickern , however, he was only active for about two years before another club change was pending and he transferred to the offspring of SV Nettelnburg / Allermöhe . As in the last time at St. Pauli, he was mainly active in the B-youth . From the amateur club in Hamburg-Bergedorf he went to Altona 93 in Hamburg-Altona in 2005 , where he was about to switch to men's football in the following years.

Nevertheless, in the summer of 2007 he moved to VfL 93 Hamburg , also founded in 1893 , the largest sports club in Hamburg-Winterhude , where he played mainly in the club's own youth team, but also made his first appearances in men's football. He made his debut in this very same place on August 10, 2007 in a 2: 3 away defeat against Meiendorfer SV , when coach Daniel Sager used him as a replacement for Benedict Kummerfeldt from the second half. He then played seven more championship games by mid-October and scored one goal in the team around the dangerous Portuguese Davide Pedroso-Bussu. He achieved this in his fifth outing, a 4-2 home win over SV Grün-Weiss Harburg on September 14th. After that, he was no longer part of the squad of the team that played in the Hamburg Oberliga and appeared more frequently for the younger generation. Nothing is known about Weidlich's appearances in the Hamburg Cup , in which VfL 93 made it to the round of 16 this season.

Breakthrough at USC Paloma Hamburg

In the summer of 2008, the midfielder moved to his seventh club in Hamburg, USC Paloma Hamburg, founded in 1909 . In his first team, Weidlich, who was also once a candidate for the national team at the U-20s, but there was no further engagement, was used in the 2008/09 season from the sixth championship round. After he was used in a 1: 3 defeat against eventual champions SC Victoria Hamburg under coach Frank Hüllmann from the second half of the game and only a few minutes after his substitution scored the only goal of his team, he became a regular player. By the end of the season he only missed a single encounter and ended up with a record of 28 league appearances, in which he scored five goals and prepared two more goals for his teammates. In the final standings, the team ranked eleventh place in the table and brought it to seventh place in the following season 2009/10 . This season, Weidlich came again to 28 of 34 possible league appearances, but was already much more offensive. After the first eight championship rounds, he had seven goals and one assist to book. After that, he mostly acted as a playmaker and template provider, although he only made irregular appearances from mid-April to the end of the season at the end of May. In his 28 league appearances, he scored nine goals and eleven assists.

After two seasons at USC Paloma Hamburg, Weidlich was recruited by Sylt hotelier Volker Koppel for his short-lived FC Sylt, founded in 2008 . For the club, which largely consisted of former professional players or veterans, the 20- and 21-year-old Weidlich then played regularly in the 2010/11 Soccer Schleswig Holstein League . From the beginning of the season until mid-October he was a regular player and was involved in eleven league appearances with one goal and three assists, before he was mostly no longer part of the squad until the winter break. Weidlich was only back in the regular squad in March 2011 and contributed two hits and four assists in his first six games in the spring. After he subsequently played four games without scorer points, towards the end of April he mostly sat on the bench without being used or was not even part of the Sylt squad. During the entire season, which FC Sylt finished third in the table, the Ghanaian midfielder made 21 league appearances, three goals and seven assists.

From Sylt via Hamburg to Neustrelitz

Shortly after the end of the season, Weidlich announced his departure from FC Sylt and returned to his hometown Hamburg, where he joined the second team of FC St. Pauli , which had just been promoted to the regional league . Under Jörn Großkopf he quickly developed into a regular player and was able to contribute a goal in his third league appearance. Weidlich, who was used in various midfield positions - mostly on the right side - made 28 appearances, three goals and two assists by the end of the day. In the final ranking of the Regionalliga Nord 2011/12 , the team from Millerntor ranked 17th and last place in the table, but did not have to relegate to the next lower division due to the regional league reform. For Weidlich it brought another change of club, which led him to Neustrelitz , around 250 kilometers away . At TSG Neustrelitz there , with games in the fourth-class Regionalliga Nordost , the Hamburger, who is mostly in the right midfield, found it difficult to play in the regular formation. Under Rastislav Hodul , he almost never played a full 90 minutes and often acted as a substitute. With two hits and three assists from 23 league appearances, there was hardly anything to be heard from his former offensive strength. The only highlight for Weidlich this season was winning the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Cup with a 3-0 final victory over Hansa Rostock , in which he only had too few minutes played as a substitute. After the end of the season, when the Neustrelitzer took eighth place in the table in the Regionalliga Nordost 2012/13 , Weidlich was again without a club and returned to his home town of Hamburg.

Trial training units such as at Wormatia Worms did not lead to any commitment, which is why he kept himself fit with the district division Croatia Hamburg . At this point in time he wanted to play at least in the regional league as a professional footballer, which is why he fundamentally rejected possible offers from lower-class clubs. After barely a year without a club, he rejoined TSG Neustrelitz in the winter of 2013/14. With the team, which took first place in the table from the tenth round, he was again unable to assert himself as a regular player, as the Neustrelitz team with Christopher Mandiangu , Hugo Lopes, Christian Skoda or Ingo Wunderlich had several players who play in Weidlich's traditional position could. By the end of the season, the man from Hamburg had made twelve league appearances and scored two goals. Since the team from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was still in first place in the table at the end of the 2013/14 season , TSG Neustrelitz qualified for participation in the promotion round to the third division . In the 2-0 defeat in the first leg against 1. FSV Mainz 05 II, he was still in action for the full 90 minutes in the right midfield, but a few days later he only completed one half, but was the only one Goal of his team in this promotion round.

After the botched promotion to professional football, Weidlich stayed with TSG and already at the beginning of the 2014/15 season advanced to a top player and a regular at the Neustrelitzer. After just three rounds of play, he had scored three goals and prepared another two for his teammate. In the course of the season, the midfielder was able to register himself as a goal scorer and was also one of the team's most offensively dangerous players towards the end of the season, contributing one goal and four assists in the last three championship games. Overall, the Ghanaian-born offensive player completed 26 of 30 possible league games and was among the top 10 in the scorer points list of the Regionalliga Nordost 2014/15 with eight goals and seven assists. In the final standings, however, the team only reached eighth place and thus a place in Table middle field. Things went better for the team again in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Cup, where they made it into the final for the sixth time. Weidlich was involved in four of his team's five games on the way there and had, among other things, scored a brace in the 14: 1 victory over Tribseeser SV. In the final, which he completed as a left midfielder - as he has often done in the league - he met his brother Denis , who was under contract with Hansa Rostock at the time. Unlike two years earlier, the Neustrelitzer could not prevail against the big club from Rostock and lost the final with 0: 1.

Via the federal capital to Niederlausitz

After the longest engagement of his career as a football player so far, Weidlich continued this with BFC Dynamo , the record champions of the GDR Oberliga , in the federal capital Berlin . With the Berliners, to whom he was transferred free of charge, he acted as a regular in the right midfield right from the start of the 2015/16 season . At the side of Thiago Rockenbach , who was mostly in the central or attacking midfield , Weidlich made 28 of 34 possible championship appearances and a record of three hits and twelve assists, making him the second best this season, behind Zafer Yelen from Berlin's AK 07 Was assistant to the league. In the final table, the former GDR successful club finished fourth, 19 points behind the champions and promoted FSV Zwickau . In addition to two appearances in the Berlin State Cup , when BFC Dynamo was eliminated on penalties in the quarter-finals against SC Staaken , Weidlich also played in the DFB-Pokal 2015/16 , the first round defeat against FSV Frankfurt . Shortly before the official end of the season, the German-Ghanaian dual citizen announced his departure from Berlin after just one season and turned down an offer from Berlin.

His further career took him to Niederlausitz , where he joined the emerging regional league team Energie Cottbus and signed a contract until summer 2017. In Cottbus , too , Weidlich was almost without exception in the starting line-up under coach Claus-Dieter Wollitz and was one of the title favorites with the team after the first third of the season. In the Regionalliga Nordost 2016/17 , the German-Ghanaian played in a total of 32 championship games and contributed three goals and five assists. The team was in second place in the final standings, nine points behind FC Carl Zeiss Jena . He also won the Brandenburg Cup with the club , in which he was used in the last four games from the last sixteen in the 2016/17 season . Especially in the 11-1 victory over SV Victoria Seelow in the round of 16, Weidlich was able to draw attention to himself with three goals. In the 2-0 final victory over FSV 63 Luckenwalde , he did not play in his traditional position in the right or attacking midfield, but was used by Wollitz as a right-back.

After an early contract extension in April, when his contract, which expired in the summer, was extended to June 2018 and this would be extended by another year in the event of promotion to the 3rd division, he completed an even more successful season 2017/18 with the Cottbus team . Wollitz continued to use him in the regular team, with the 1.84 m tall midfielder making 29 league appearances and six hits. With Energie Cottbus at the end of the season he was in first place in the table with 28 wins, five draws and a single defeat, 31 points ahead of the runner-up and thus easily made it to professional football. Furthermore, he won the Brandenburg Cup with the Cottbus team again, with four goals and two assists he was considered one of the top performers of his team. His dusting goal in the 85th minute after a shot on goal by Marcelo Freitas in the 1-0 final victory over SV Babelsberg 03 was decisive for the team, which had moved to several positions. In addition, the native of Hamburg was used in the 1st main round of the DFB Cup 2017/18 against the Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart . In this encounter Energie Cottbus was only eliminated on penalties against the Stuttgart team . In the promotion round following the Brandenburg Cup final a few days after the third division , Weidlich and his team won the first leg 3-2, which meant that the 0-0 draw in the second leg was enough and the Cottbus team returned to professional football.

With the first game of the 2018/19 season , Weidlich, still in action as a regular, made his professional debut when he played the full 90 minutes as a right midfielder in the 3-0 home win over Hansa Rostock . After the end of this season and the relegation of FC Energie Cottbus to the Regionalliga Nordost , Weidlich announced his departure from the club because no new contract offer had been made to him.

For the first time in the Rhineland

After a six-month break without a club , during which Weidlich trained at FC St. Pauli , he signed a contract with the Rhenish regional division SC Fortuna Köln before the start of the second half of the 2019/20 season .
