Convention of the Sisters of Mercy

The monastery building was built from 1856 to 1858 according to plans by Karl Schaumburg. Like the church, it was badly damaged and rebuilt during World War II . At the beginning of the 1960s, renovations and new buildings took place. The convent encloses an inner courtyard in which the church is located. In the Marienhaus there is a chapel for the Immaculate Conception with a late Gothic wooden crucifix by Tilman Riemenschneider (1480–1483).

The Mariengasse 12 building is a listed building .

Church Immaculate Conception

The Church of the Sisters of Mercy is in the immediate vicinity of the Lazarist Church. The church is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and was built in 1860 according to the plans of the architect Karl Schaumburg. When bombs hit in 1944, only the neo-Romanesque towers on the main facade were spared. The destroyed church interior was rebuilt between 1952 and 1954 as a simple relay hall according to plans by Karl Lebwohl . The towers are crowned by pointed helmets. Various sandstone figures by the artist Josef Papst adorn the church. On the tympanum relief there are depictions of St. Joseph of Nazareth with the baby Jesus and the boy John from the second half of the 19th century.

The interior of the church consists of three naves and four bays with an apse . On the choir wall, which is decorated with mosaics, there is a statue of Maria Immaculata by Jakob Gschiel from 1859. The tabernacle has an enamel work by the artist Franz Rogler. The reliefs are by Johann Franz and the wooden figures of Saints Joseph and Vinzenz von Paul were made by Jakob Geschiel. The Stations of the Cross were designed by Anton Hafner and the sandstone figures of the twelve apostles by Josef Papst.

In the crypt chapel, which is consecrated to the Sorrowful Mother , there is also a sandstone figure of the Pope depicting the risen Christ (1956). The four-bay chapel is equipped with a late baroque crucifix and a pietà made of sandstone.

The church is also a listed building .
