qualification

August 19, 1958, 4.15 p.m.

The twenty participants competed in a joint qualifying round. The qualification distance for direct entry into the final was 55.00 m. Only two throwers were eliminated. Eighteen athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue), so that, as in almost all jumping and throwing disciplines, a large final field was created. The question arises as to why qualifications were set at all.
