The men's long jump at the 1974 European Athletics Championships was held on September 3 and 4, 1974 in the Olympic Stadium in Rome .

Two medals, gold and bronze, went to the Soviet Union in this competition. Valery Pidluschnyj became European champion . He won before the Yugoslav Nenad Stekić. Third place went to Yevgeny Schubin.

Record improvement

Vice European champion Nenad Stekić improved the existing EM record by five centimeters to 8.05 m. The distance of the winner was supported by too strong a tailwind, so that it could not be recognized as a record. YugoslaviaYugoslavia

As seventeenth in the qualification, Joachim Busse could not qualify for the final

22 participants entered the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 7.70 m. Since only six athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue), the final field was filled with the next best placed athletes to twelve jumpers (highlighted in light green). So finally 7.62 m was enough for the final.
