The men's 400-meter hurdles at the 1983 World Athletics Championships took place on August 7, 8 and 9, 1983 in Helsinki , Finland .
34 athletes from 28 countries took part in the competition. The gold medal was won by American Olympic champion in 1976 Edwin Moses to 47.50 s, silver went to the Olympic bronze medalists from 1984 and two-time European champion ( 1978 / 1982 ) Harald Schmid from the Federal Republic of Germany with 48.61 s. The bronze medal went to Alexander Charlow from the Soviet Union with 49.03 s.
