The men's triple jump at the 1997 World Athletics Championships was held on August 6 and 8, 1997 in the Olympic Stadium in the Greek capital, Athens .

In this competition, the Cuban three jumpers won two medals, gold and bronze. World champion was Yoelbi Quesada, third in the 1996 Olympics . He won ahead of the British defending champion, Olympic second in 1996, World Cup third in 1993 and world record holder Jonathan Edwards . Bronze went to Aliecer Urrutia .

qualification

August 6, 1997, 8:15 a.m.

39 participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 17.00 m. Eight athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the four next placed athletes to twelve jumpers (highlighted in light green). So finally 16.84 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.
