About this picture

Lichtenfels is a collective municipality in the northwest of the North Hessian district of Waldeck-Frankenberg ( Germany ). The community bears the title of “city”, which it inherited from its sub-communities Sachsenberg and Fürstenberg ; the administrative headquarters are located in the largest district of Goddelsheim . Most of the Waldeckian Switzerland is located in Lichtenfels .

Geographical location

Lichtenfels is located at the northeast foot of the Rothaargebirge about 53 kilometers (as the crow flies ) southwest of Kassel , not far from the western end of the Edersee in the southwest of the Waldecker Land . The Medebacher Bay borders to the west , and the Breite Struth to the south . In the northeast it borders on the Ittertal , in the east on the Edertal , behind which the Kellerwald rises, and in the south on the Nuhnetal .

The municipality, in which the districts are widely scattered, is traversed by the Orke and the Wild Aa ("Aar"). With its area of almost 100 km² and a forest share of almost 40%, Lichtenfels is one of the most extensive and densely wooded communities in the district.

Neighboring communities

Lichtenfels borders in the north on the city of Korbach , in the east on the municipality Vöhl , in the south on the city of Frankenberg (all in the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg); and in the west to the cities of Hallenberg and Medebach (both in the Hochsauerlandkreis in North Rhine-Westphalia ).

history

In the run-up to the regional reform in Hesse , the two cities of Fürstenberg and Sachsenberg and the six communities of Dalwigksthal , Goddelsheim , Immighausen , Münden , Neukirchen and Rhadern merged to form a city called Lichtenfels with effect from October 1, 1971 . For the area of each of the formerly independent municipalities, a local district with a local advisory board and a local mayor was set up.

Historical lore

The Lichtenfels city archive is kept in the Hessian State Archive in Marburg (inventory 330 Lichtenfels). Almost all of the holdings have been developed and can be researched online.
