List of fortresses in Switzerland
The list of fortresses in Switzerland includes fortress structures from the 15th century to the end of the Cold War .
Older fortresses
In the Middle Ages, the cities were fortified with city walls for their defense ; from the 19th century, fortifications were built near the border at strategically important pass crossings and railway tunnels.

Artillery and other fortresses of the Swiss Army
Most of the fortresses were built during World War II as well as during Army 61 and decommissioned with the Army reform in 1995 and Army XXI . The Swiss army maintained artillery fortresses , with guns the caliber cm 7.5, 10.5-cm-tower cannon or were equipped 15 cm. The guns were housed in casemates , gun turrets or behind armored slots.
Some have been made accessible as museums or can be visited on request.
In addition to the artillery works, the infantry blocking points were permanently fortified throughout Switzerland .
