List of cemeteries in Cologne
The Christian desire to be buried as close as possible to a martyr, a relic or a holy place led from the Middle Ages onwards to around half of the deceased being buried in churches, monasteries or monasteries. The enclosed church (fried) courtyard also became another main burial place for the Catholic parishioners. Even in death, people of different faiths were denied access. They were with foreign dead, criminals and other socially excluded mostly outside the city walls on misery (s) cemeteries - meek means something like strangers - buried.
Despite the unsanitary conditions in the overcrowded churches and the apparent lack of burial places in the church yards, a decisive change did not occur until the French occupation (1794–1815). In 1804 an imperial decree was issued that - mainly for health reasons - burials were no longer allowed within the (then) city limits. The former sole burial rights of the Catholic Church were also transferred to the civil parish.
With the opening of the Melaten Central Cemetery in 1810, the inner-city cemeteries were closed at the same time ; 22 - mostly churchyards - are said to have existed at that time. Although the above decree also applied to the cemeteries of the suburbs on the left and right of the Rhine, these were often only replaced by municipal cemeteries decades later.
In 2019 there are 55 municipal and 7 denominational cemeteries in Cologne that are accessible as public burial sites. The archbishop's crypt and the canon cemetery of Cologne Cathedral are reserved for the clergy. Mainly in the Cologne suburbs, churchyards have been preserved in their basic substance, a few have been converted or expanded into cemeteries that are still verifiable today.

- ↑ The information on the size of the cemeteries and the number of graves are based almost exclusively on the standard work by Günter Leitner: Friedhöfe in Köln - Mitten im Leben and thus reflect the status of 2003. In order to keep the list format clear, the comments are usually concise and formulated in key words. Especially where there are already individual items, z. For example, no further descriptions or the naming of graves are given.
