The population of Western Australia is concentrated in the southwest of the state. Outside of the Perth area , the population density is relatively low compared to the rural areas of eastern Australia . Most of the highways therefore run in the densely populated areas.

In Australia, the term freeway describes a certain type of highway. A freeway is basically multi-lane and has entry and exit free of intersections.

Since the outback makes up most of Western Australia, outback tracks are vital connections to remote places and settlements. For the most part, the roads are unpaved, very remote and often run through restricted areas.
