List of Poets Laureate in the United Kingdom
The United Kingdom Poet Laureate is a distinguished honorary position held by the United Kingdom Monarch on the proposal of the British Prime Minister . The office does not include any special duties, it merely includes the expectation that the incumbent will write significant poetry on national occasions.
There is an annual fee associated with the office which is currently £ 5,760. The Poet Laureate also traditionally receives a barrel with around 477 liters of sherry .
Carol Ann Duffy was the first female, first Scottish and first openly gay poet laureate since May 2009 . Her successor has been Simon Armitage since May 2019 .
The office of Laureate for Children is currently held by Malorie Blackman .
history
Until the Act of Union 1707 , the office was called Poet Laureate of the Kingdom of England , then Poet Laureate of the Kingdom of Great Britain . Since 1800, the position has been called the Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom .
Traditionally the office was held until the end of life. The only Poet Laureate to be dismissed in 1688 was John Dryden for refusing to take the oath of allegiance to the new king, William III. , afford to. Since Andrew Motion was appointed in 1999, the ten-year term has been set.
The office was turned down by Thomas Gray , Walter Scott , Rudyard Kipling , Philip Larkin and Seamus Heaney .
