The list of monuments in Hanover contains a number of selected monuments , memorials , sculptures , artistic objects of plastic ("street art") and fountains in public spaces, especially in the downtown area of Hanover .

Ernst August Memorial

Equestrian statue of Ernst August I.

The monument was in 1861 by Albert Wolff before the main station completed. It shows King Ernst August in a hussar uniform and is a bronze equestrian statue on a granite base (from the Brocken ) with the inscription on the base: "To the country father, his loyal people", on the bronze foot: "Geb. June 5, 1771. King June 20, 1837. Gest 18 Novbr 1851. Established September 21, 1861 ”.

The Ernst-August-Monument serves as a meeting point for many Hanoverians, the phrase is common, one meets "under the tail".

Monuments to Stromeyer, Karmarsch, Marschner

Opernplatz / Georgstrasse

A riddle, more of a Hanoverian kid's joke, about these three characters is: Question: "What is the difference between Stromeyer, Karmarsch and Marschner?" - Answer: "Stromeyer has none, Karmarsch has him in the back and Marschner in the middle!" (Source: Dirk Böttcher)

Göttingen Seven

In the immediate vicinity of the Lower Saxony state parliament at the Leineschloss in Hanover, a large bronze monument was set on the place of the Göttinger Sieben, the Göttinger Sieben , which was created by the Italian artist Floriano Bodini (1933-2005). In Göttingen, the central campus of the Georg August University also bears the name Platz der Göttinger Sieben.

Fritz Beindorff fountain

Fountain in honor of Fritz Beindorff in the List district on the edge of the Eilenriede opposite Fritz-Beindoff-Allee . The fountain is adorned by two bronze pelicans, which are the emblems of the Pelikan stationery company . Since 1895 he has managed the company, which is now a global company. In 1907 he became Senator of the City of Hanover, an honorary citizen in 1940. In 1913 he was also appointed Prussian Council of Commerce and later Consul General of Romania .

Bödeker monument

By Carl Dopmeyer (1880) on the north side of the tower of the Marktkirche Hannover , Hanns-Lilje-Platz, for the Marktkirchen pastor and benefactor Hermann Wilhelm Bödeker . Originally provided with a fountain on a plinth on Schmiedestrasse. In 1939, simplified to the current location.

Duve fountain

The Duve Fountain with the Figure of a Sower by Georg Herting (1914). Median of the Leibnizufer , near the flea market, at the pedestrian crossing from Calenberger Strasse to Mike-Gehrke-Promenade. Originally crowning the Duve fountain set up on Neustädter Markt in 1915/16 in memory of the Hanoverian merchant and banker Johann Duve (1611–1679), whose portrait medallion can be found on the base of the fountain. At the current location since 1953.

Gänseliesel fountain

By Carl Dopmeyer (1898), Hanover, Goseriede (northeast edge of the Am Steintor square ). Basin and column made of granite, bronze group of the fairy tale character of the goose-herding girl. Set up here because of the Low German name of the Goseriede (= "Gänsegraben"), since 1981/84 at the current location.

"Sport" glass mosaic by Eduard Bargheer

The glass mosaic " Sport " by Eduard Bargheer was made in 1962/1963 in the August Wagner workshops in Berlin. It stands next to the south entrance of the HDI-Arena .

Gutenberg monument

Bronze statue by Carl Dopmeyer (1890) in memory of Johannes Gutenberg on the building of the former JC König & Ebhardt account book factory , Schloßwender Straße 1–4 (today University of Hanover), formerly part of the Gutenberg fountain on Friederikenplatz donated by Heinrich Ebhardt . Set up at the current location in 1949.

Helmcke monument

In memory of the master baker and grain dealer Johann Gerhard Helmcke (1750–1824) who saved Herrenhäuser Allee from being cut down by the Napoleonic occupation forces at the beginning of the 19th century by paying 3,000 thalers. The stone stele with a portrait medallion stands at the level of the Schneiderberg tram stop on the edge of Walter-Großmann-Weg.

Hölty memorial

In memory of the poet Ludwig Christoph Heinrich Hölty in the St. Nikolai cemetery (1901) by Otto Lüer and Karl Gundelach , portrait medallion by Friedrich Adolf Sötebier from 1961. Bronze figure of a young man, leaning on a stone plinth with the portrait. The exact location of the grave in the cemetery is unknown. The memorial verses were written by Nikolaus Lenau: "Hölty, your friend spring has come. He is wistfully wrong in the house to find you. But in vain, his complaining call fades into lonely shadows."

Holocaust memorial on Opernplatz

The memorial for the murdered Jews of Hanover on Opernplatz has existed since 1994 and bears the names of around 2000 deported and murdered Jewish citizens engraved in stone.

Queen Monument

On Hohenzollernstrasse (on a small square on the edge of the Eilenriede ), marble group by Valentino Casal (1910), a replica of the figures of the two sisters Queen Luise of Prussia and Queen Friederike of Hanover by Johann Gottfried Schadow . Gift from Kaiser Wilhelm II.

"L'Air" by Aristide Maillol

"L'Air" , the bronze figure of a floating woman on a pedestal in a water basin, placed in 1961 on Georgsplatz (in front of the old north / LB). A replica of a sculpture by the French sculptor Aristide Maillol , actually a memorial to the pioneers of the France-South America airline in Toulouse (1939). At the inauguration in 1961, the SPD politician Carlo Schmid (like Maillol, who comes from southern France) gave a speech.

Leibniz Temple

The Leibniz Temple , built by Hofrat Johann Daniel Ramberg on a hill on Paradeplatz (later Waterlooplatz ) from 1787 to 1790 , was moved to the Georgengarten in 1935 as a picturesque "point de vue" .

Leibniz Memorial

The Leibniz monument at the opera triangle by Stefan Schwerdtfeger from 2008, 2.5 m high bronze head on a granite base with information blocks in front of it. One side of the head shows the binary number system developed by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz , the other the Leibniz quote "Unity in multiplicity - unitas in multitudine".

Luther monument

Bronze statue by Carl Dopmeyer (begun in 1899, completed in 1900 by Ferdinand Hartzer ) on the Marktkirche Hanover , tower south side, Am Markt. Originally, the figure of Martin Luther was accompanied by figures from the history of the Hanover Reformation, and it was displayed here in its present form in 1952.

Market fountain

1881 by Conrad Wilhelm Hase (fountain) and Wilhelm Engelhard (figures), Am Markt (next to the old town hall ). Two-shell bronze fountain, fountain stick with a fish seller (with carp, looking towards Schmiedestrasse) and a flower seller (with a jug and a purse, looking towards Bohlendamm), 1881 after a design by CW Hase, figures by Wilhelm Engelhard (after Hermann Schaper ). Ornaments: T. Massler, casting: Hermann Gladenbeck . In 1960 moved from the center of the town hall to the current location.

Fountain with an expressionist majolica plant sculpture by Marlene and Hans Poelzig , (1925) erected on behalf of the Goslar merchant Hermann Reese. Located on Fritz-Behrens-Allee near the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media and is a listed building . 52 ° 22 '36.8 "  N , 9 ° 45' 15.1"  E

Schiller monument

Bronze statue of Wilhelm Engelhard from 1863 on Georgstrasse at the confluence with Schillerstrasse. Unveiled for the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig on Georgsplatz (in front of Lyceum I) on Schiller's day of death (May 9th). Removed in 1955 and stored in the municipal building yard. Re-erected in 1959 on the back of the opera house. Set up at its current location in 1982.

Sphinxes at the Wilhelm Busch Museum (Georgengarten)

Two sandstone sphinxes on the landings on the back of the former Wallmodenschlösschen, today's Wilhelm-Busch-Museum in Georgengarten . Sculptor: unknown. Remnants of the pleasure palace Faintasie , created 1707-09 in the former Steintormasch, moved here after its demolition.

Schrader monument

Obelisk , erected in 1849 for Diederich Heinrich Schrader on today's Waterloostrasse opposite the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Library . It is reminiscent of a Hanoverian lifeguard and bears the inscription "With this monument the people honor the professional loyalty of one of their fellow citizens. - DLX (560) people owe him their rescue from danger of death."

Waldersee monument

Stone sculpture by Bernhard Hoetger from 1916 on Hohenzollernstrasse (on the edge of the Eilenriede). In memory of General Field Marshal Alfred von Waldersee (1832–1904), who once lived in the house opposite , 1900/01 Commander in Chief of the European troops against the Chinese Boxer Rebellion .

Waterloo Column

Waterloo Column from 1832 with a statue of Victoria , erected in memory of the Battle of Waterloo . The almost 65 m high column was designed by Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves . The Victoria was commissioned by Adolphus Frederick, 1st Duke of Cambridge , for the price of 200 Louis d'or using 10 quintals of copper based on a design by the sculptor Heinrich Ludwig August Hengst (1796–1868) by the Hanoverian court plumber Konrad Beckmann (1780–1850) and his son Franz (1811–?).

Wotan monument

By Wilhelm Engelhard (1888) in limestone, behind the Lower Saxony State Museum in Planckstrasse. Consists of limestone and shows the Germanic god Wotan with his two wolves. Set up in 1901, removed in 1943, set up again at the old location in 1987.

Von-Alten-Monument

Bronze statue of Count Carl von Alten von Heinrich Kümmel (1849) in front of the south wing of the Lower Saxony Main State Archives on Waterlooplatz.
