Little drummer boy

Little Drummer Boy ("The Little Drummer") is an American Christmas carol . It tells the story of a poor boy who cannot afford to give the newborn Jesus a gift and therefore, with the consent of the Virgin Mary, plays his drum for him. In a miraculous way, the newborn seems to understand this and smiles gratefully at him.

Emergence

The song was composed and lyrics under the original title The Carol of the Drum in 1941 by Katherine K. Davis. Henry Onorati and Harry Simeone, listed as co-authors, have contributed various arrangements for the song. The song first became known in the version of the Trapp Family Singers in the mid-1950s.

Versions

One of the most famous versions was sung as a duet by Bing Crosby and David Bowie in September 1977 . For Bowie, who hated the song, an opposing voice ( Peace on Earth ) was specially composed . Bing Crosby died a few weeks after the recording, which first aired on television around Christmas 1977. This version was Bing Crosby's most successful recording since White Christmas .
