Munzingen is a rural village and since July 1, 1973 a district of Freiburg im Breisgau with its own local administration. Like the other Freiburg Tuniberg villages Waltershofen , Opfingen and Tiengen , it lies on the eastern edge of the Tuniberg and is the southernmost of these places.
history
Munzingen was first mentioned in 845. However, finds from the Stone Age indicate a very early settlement of the area. The ending "-ingen" in the place name indicates an Alemannic foundation. In the Middle Ages the place belonged to the Lords of Üsenberg for a long time , later to the Lords of Staufen and then to the Snewlin family from Freiburg under Habsburg suzerainty as part of Upper Austria . Therefore, the Reformation was not carried out in Munzingen and the place remained Catholic. Munzingen has been in Baden since 1806.
economy
The place is known nationwide as an important wine and asparagus growing area. Over 60% Pinot Noir , 25% Müller-Thurgau and 10% Pinot Blanc are grown by the Munzinger winemakers , most of whom belong to the Munzingen Winegrowers Association, on approx. 150 hectares of deep loess soil in the Kapellenberg site . Other specialties are Gewürztraminer and Muscatel .
Below is Erentrudiskapelle turf grown.
In addition to the agricultural sector, there are also companies in the field of industry and craft based in Munzingen .
A manufacturer of diaphragm pumps is worth mentioning as a company in the industrial sector .
traffic
Two bus routes operated by the Freiburger Verkehrs AG link the town with the urban area of Freiburg. In addition, the Freiburg – Hartheim regional bus runs through the town. The nearby A 5 motorway can be reached via the Freiburg-Süd junction (towards Tiengen) or Bad Krozingen (towards Hausen an der Möhlin ).
Attractions
- The landmark of the Tuniberg is visible from afar in the area: the Erentrudis Chapel , which rises above the village at the southern tip of the Tuniberg. It is named after Erentrudis von Salzburg and was first built in the second half of the 17th century. From 1750–1752 it was restored and refurbished by the sculptor Matthias Faller . Some of the equipment was brought to the Augustinian Museum in Freiburg .
- Munzingen Castle is still located on the Munzingen district , which is still inhabited by the von Kageneck family. It was built in 1672 by Johann Friedrich Reichsfreiherr von Kageneck in the Renaissance style. In 1745 it was changed in the Rococo style. The richly decorated facade of the small castle is worth seeing .
- Reinach Castle , a former manor owned by the von Pforr family , then their heirs, the von Kageneck family, now a hotel and restaurant.
- The Catholic parish church of St. Stephan is located in the center of the village . The choir dates from 1590, the nave from 1648 was enlarged in 1747 and redesigned in baroque style. A font from the 17th century is noteworthy.
