history

August Madsack founded the Hannoverscher Anzeiger A. Madsack & Co. company in 1893. The Hannoversche Anzeiger first appeared on March 1, 1893 with a circulation of 48,000 copies and rose to the highest-circulation newspaper in Hanover and the surrounding area over the next few decades.

In 1928 the Anzeiger high-rise designed by the architect Fritz Höger was inaugurated as the new publishing house with an adjoining print shop. The news magazine Der Spiegel was founded in 1947 and the magazine Stern in 1948 in the building, which is important in terms of press history .

After the death of the founder August Madsack in 1933, his son Erich Madsack continued to run the publishing house: on March 1, 1943, the publishing house was closed by the Nazi regime . The publishing house was re-founded in 1949 as the publishing company Madsack GmbH & Co. KG by Erich Madsack and resumed operations in the same buildings. The successor to the Hannoversche Anzeiger was the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung (HAZ) on August 25, 1949 , which is still the daily newspaper with the highest circulation in Lower Saxony.

In 1968, in the wake of the Hanoverian student protests , violent demonstrations broke out in front of the Anzeiger high-rise, as the Bild-Zeitung of Springer-Verlag was printed and distributed here.

The company has expanded since the 1970s. First, regional newspapers from Lower Saxony were taken over, including the Göttinger Tageblatt (1973) and the Neue Hannoversche Presse (today: Neue Presse ). While the Göttinger Tageblatt gets its national cover from the HAZ editorial team, the Neue Presse has its own editorial team.

In 1974, the publishing house moved into a new printing and publishing house on a plot of land outside the city center, which today belongs to the Bemerode district after a change in the district boundaries (previously it belonged to the Seelhorst district ). At the same time, the offset printing process was used.

Advertising papers changed the newspaper market in the 1980s. Madsack responded with its own offers. Today's group of companies includes 28 titles.

With the privatization of the television landscape, Madsack entered the TV business, founded the television technology service provider TVN Group , based in Hanover, and delivered images from northern Germany for TV news every day. This was followed by productions for regional programs, image and industrial films as well as external broadcasts.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Madsack media group tried to gain a foothold in the new federal states. At the beginning of 1991 the Treuhandgesellschaft awarded the publishing company and Axel Springer Verlag equal shares of the Leipzig publishing and printing company. In addition to the Leipziger Volkszeitung, this also included its sub-editions and the Dresdner Neuesten Nachrichten . The journalistic and publishing management was with Madsack.

In the early 1990s, Madsack switched to digital newspaper production with its own software P.INK . In 1996, the company began its first online news service (Madsack On Line) . Over time, offers in the online area and for mobile devices followed, in addition to the print offers.

In addition to the print business, further business areas were established, in the postal and logistics business with the establishment of Citipost (1998) and in the corporate publishing area with the establishment of the Madsack media agency (2006).

With the takeover of majority stakes in Hitzeroth Druck + Medien GmbH & Co. KG (Marburg, publisher Oberhessische Presse ) in 2002, Wilhelm Bing Druckerei und Verlag GmbH (Korbach, publisher Waldeckische Landeszeitung , Frankenberger Zeitung ) in 2003 and Druck - and Pressehaus Naumann KG (Gelnhausen, Gelnhäuser Neue Zeitung ) in 2006 the media group expanded its sphere of activity to Hesse.

In 2009 Madsack acquired the largest investment package to date since the company was founded. With the acquisition of investments in regional newspapers of Axel Springer AG, the company is now majority owner of the Leipziger Volkszeitung , the Lübeck news and the Ostsee-Zeitung .

In March 2010, the Madsack media group opened its Berlin office in the immediate vicinity of Parliament and the Chancellery on Schiffbauerdamm . The capital office of the RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland is now in the building of the Federal Press Conference . With the opening of the first Madsack Media Store branch in Hanover in October 2011, the media group launched a new retail concept with which the readers of daily newspapers are to be introduced to the digital products of the publishing houses. Product packages for mobile media use are sold in the branches, consisting of editorial apps, tablet PCs, data flat rate and training. The media store concept was adapted according to the franchise principle by publishers that do not belong to the Madsack media group (Aachener Zeitungsverlag, Nordwest-Zeitung Verlagsgesellschaft).

With MVD Potsdam GmbH (publisher of the Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung ) from the F. A. Z. group, the Madsack media group took over another regional publisher from the new federal states on December 30, 2011.

In March 2012, the Madsack media group announced that in future exclusive content on the online portals belonging to the group will only be offered for a fee (freemium model) . Madsack was one of the first publishers to use paid content on the Internet .

In September 2016, Madsack acquired the majority in Heinekingmedia GmbH. The company is active in the field of digital signage and offers networked audiovisual information systems for institutions and companies, including the stashcat service.

In January 2015, the media group sold its holdings in the Oberhessische Presse (Hitzeroth Druck + Medien GmbH & Co. KG) and in the Waldeckische Landeszeitung and Frankenberger Zeitung (Wilhelm Bing Druckerei und Verlag GmbH).

In September 2017, Madsack took over the majority in CleverShuttle Leipzig GmbH . In addition, the company concluded a franchise agreement with CleverShuttle for up to five other cities.

Group restructuring Madsack 2018

With the Madsack 2018 Agenda , the top management announced a restructuring of the group on October 2, 2013 at a management conference of the media group in Hanover. According to managing director Thomas Düffert, a new central editorial office , which will operate under the name RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland GmbH , should "offer national content in a better quality than a single regional newspaper could deliver on its own". Matthias Koch, former editor-in-chief of the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung, will set up and manage the central editorial office .

The daily referred to the plans as a well-known savings model, Michael Konken from the German Association of Journalists spoke of a "blow against media diversity". The works council fears job losses, the closure of locations, further tariff-free zones, the disqualification of activities and serious disadvantages for the employees.

In July 2014, the group announced that it would close the customer service center in Hanover at the end of the year. The center's 87 employees had previously struck for a collective agreement for 117 days, one of the longest strikes in a media company , according to the Ver.di union . Ver.di Vice Frank Werneke called this "the cynical demonstration of power by a corporation that wants to secure its profit margins through flight evasion and low wages". Madsack justified the closure with the Madsack 2018 corporate restructuring program . The customer service center cannot be operated economically “due to structural conditions”.

Madsack Market Solutions was founded in April 2014 . This is intended to carry out market development across the board, including in the areas of advertising, analysis, pricing or customer service. The Madsack Market Solutions is made up of the areas of business-to-consumer , business-to-business as well as key account management along.
