Martín Fiz Martín (born March 3, 1963 in Vitoria-Gasteiz ) is a former Spanish long-distance runner , world champion in marathon running (1995) and two-time Olympic athlete (1996, 2000).

Career

Martín Fiz took 16th place at the Junior World Cross Country Championships in 1982. From 1989 to 1995 he took part in the World Cross Country Championships , in 1990, 1991 and 1995 he won bronze in the team competition. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona he was eliminated in the 5000 meter run as well as at the European Athletics Championships in 1990 in Split and the 1991 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

In 1993 Fiz completed his first marathon, the following year he won his first major title in 2:10:31 h at the European Championships in Helsinki in 1994 , and the following year he won the Rotterdam marathon in 2:08:57 h. At the 1995 World Championships , he won the title in 2:11:41 h. In the spring of the following year he won the Seoul International Marathon in 2:08:25 h.

Olympic Games 1996

At the marathon of the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , Fiz belonged to the top group for a long time and finished fourth in 2:13:20 h.

At the 1997 World Championships he was second in 2:13:21 h, five seconds behind his compatriot Abel Antón . At the 1999 World Championships in Seville, he finished eighth in 2:16:17 h.

In 1997 he won the Lake Biwa Marathon with his best time of 2:08:05 h. Two more victories in this race followed in 1999 and 2000.

Olympic Games 2000

At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney he was sixth in 2:13:06 h.

In 2001 he ended his professional career after finishing eleventh in 2:17:11 h in the Madrid Millennium Marathon .

In 2009 he won the half marathon competition of the Mallorca Marathon as a hobby runner . The Martín Fiz Marathon has been held in his hometown in his honor since 2003 .
