history

The Catholic Church of Marx

The city of Marx was founded in 1767 as a Volga-German colony by the Dutch baron Ferdinand Baron Caneau de Beauregard and was initially named "Baronsk" (Баронск). The German-language name was in honor of the Russian Empress Catherine II. Ekaterinenstadt or Katharinenstadt (Екатериненштадт; 1915–1920 Ekaterinograd, Екатериногра́д). In 1918 the place received city rights and was renamed in 1920 after Karl Marx in Marxstadt (Марксштадт). In 1941, under Stalin, as part of the action to liquidate all German names, the element “-stadt” was deleted from the name. The current name "Marx" has existed since then.
