Mary Stewart (athlete)

Mary Stewart (married Cotton ; born February 25, 1956 in Birmingham ) is a former British middle and long distance runner .

Life

In 1974 she was starting for Scotland at the British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch fourth over 1500 m , at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Gothenburg fifth over the same distance and, also starting for Scotland, eighth at the World Cross Country Championships in Monza . In 1975 she was sixth over 1500 m at the European Indoor Championships in Katowice and came eighth again at the Cross Country World Championships in Rabat .

At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal she reached the semifinals over 1500 m, and at the Indoor European Championships in 1977 in San Sebastián she won over 1500 m.

In 1978 she finished 18th at the Cross Country World Championships in Glasgow and won bronze with the English team. At the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton she won for England starting over 1500 m, at the European Athletics Championships in Prague she was eliminated over the same distance in the preliminary run.

In 1975 and 1979 she was AAA champion over 1500 m. In the hall she won three AAA titles over 1500 m (1975, 1977, 1979) and twice over 3000 m (1976, 1977).

Her older brothers Peter Stewart and Ian Stewart were successful long distance runners.
