Michael Weiss (born August 2, 1976 in Washington, DC ) is a former American figure skater who started in a single run .
Michael Weiss comes from his sporty family. His father Greg competed as a gymnast in the 1964 Olympic Games and his mother Margie was a national gymnastics champion . His sister Geremi was national junior figure skating runners-up and his sister Genna was junior world champion in diving . It was also Geremi who inspired Michael to figure skating. Michael himself was a regional champion in water jumping before.
Michael Weiss started figure skating at the age of nine and therefore relatively late. His trainer was Audrey Weisinger and from 2002 Don Laws. He took part in the US championships 19 times in a row , from 1988 to 1991 as a novice, from 1992 to 1993 as a junior and until 2006 in the seniors. In 1993, he became the American Junior Champion and in 1999, 2000 and 2003 the American Senior Champion. In 1994 he became junior world champion . In 2001 he won bronze at the Four Continents Championships in Salt Lake City , behind Li Chengjiang and Takeshi Honda . Weiss took part in world championships seven times and was never placed worse than seventh place. At the world championships in Helsinki in 1999 and in Nice in 2000 he won the bronze medal, in 1999 behind Alexei Jagudin and Yevgeny Pljuschtschenko and in 2000 behind Alexei Jagudin and Elvis Stojko . Weiss took part in the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano and 2002 in Salt Lake City and finished them in seventh place.
Weiss was the first American to compete in a quadruple toe loop , as happened in 1997, and the second American after Timothy Goebel to ever compete in a quadruple jump.
Weiss ended his long career in 2006 and has been touring with Stars on Ice ever since. He set up his own foundation that grants scholarships to figure skating talent. Have benefited so far, among others Mirai Nagasu , Madison and Keiffer Hubbell, Daisuke Murakami and Christine Zukowski.
Weiss and his wife Lisa Thornton, his former jazz dance teacher and later choreographer, whom he married in 1997, have two children together: Annie-Mae (born 1998) and Christopher Michael (born 1999).
