With you by my side (Original title: The Last Song ) is an American film adaptation of Nicholas Sparks ' bestseller The Last Song with Miley Cyrus in the leading role. Directed by Julie Anne Robinson , who made her feature film debut with the film. With you by my side was premiered on March 25, 2010 in Los Angeles and started on April 29, 2010 in German, Austrian and Swiss cinemas.

17-year-old Veronica "Ronnie" Miller's parents have split up and her father Steve has moved from New York to the country. Ronnie still accuses him of abandoning the family. She and her brother Jonah have to spend the summer holidays with their father. Steve leads a simple life and dedicates his time to completing a mosaic window for the village church. It was destroyed in a mysterious fire that almost killed Steve, Ronnie's father. Jonah enjoys spending time tinkering with his father. However, Steve simply cannot get hold of Ronnie.
Ronnie meets the self-confident will, to which she is also dismissive, like most people. On the beach she finds a clutch of sea turtle eggs . To protect it from raccoons , she now sleeps on the beach. When Ronnie asks the marine aquarium for help, it turns out that Will is working there as a volunteer. The two eventually discover similarities and Ronnie can finally enjoy the holidays. But Will's family and friends are not enthusiastic about meeting Ronnie, so their feelings for one another are put to the test.
When Ronnie's father has a coughing fit and collapses, he has to go to the hospital. Ronnie finds out that he has had lung cancer for a while and that he wanted to spend what was probably the last summer of his life with his children. It also turns out that it was not Ronnie's father who started the fire in the church, as the villagers suspect, but Will's friend Scott was a witness when someone else started a fire there. Ronnie starts playing the piano again and is reconciled with her father. After Steve dies, Ronnie returns to New York and goes to the Juilliard School , where she has been observed since she was 5 and received a scholarship after graduating from school . Her father also taught there.

The film was shot in various Georgia locations, including Savannah , Tybee Island and the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta . For the first time, a feature film was shot on Tybee Island, on which there is a protected area. Miley Cyrus chose her role name Ronny in memory of her grandfather Ron Cyrus, who passed away in 2006. With a coach she tried her Southern - dialect store for filming.
