NGC 4897 is a 12.1 likes bright barred spiral galaxy with an active galactic nucleus from Hubble type SBBC in the constellation Virgo to the ecliptic . It is estimated 109 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 90,000 ly. Together with NGC 4902 and NGC 4899 , it forms the small galaxy group LGG 321. 
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 4847 , NGC 4855 , NGC 4862 , among others .
The object was discovered together with NGC 4891 in a single observation on April 21, 1882 by Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel .
