NGC 4904 is a 12.1 mag bright barred spiral galaxy (and also a Seyfert type 1 galaxy ) of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation of Virgo , which is about 49 million light years away from the Milky Way.
It was discovered on January 1, 1786 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "pB, pL, R, bM".
