The Nares Strait ( Danish Nares Strædet , English Nares Strait ) is a waterway between Ellesmere Island (the northernmost part of Nunavut , Canada ) and Greenland . It connects Baffin Bay , a marginal sea of the Atlantic Ocean , with the Lincoln Sea in the Arctic Ocean .
geography
From south to north, the road consists of Smithsund , Kane Basin , Kennedy Canal , Hall Basin, and Robeson Canal . The largest islands in the waterway are Pim Island in Smithsund and Franklin Island in the Kennedy Channel. Little Hans Island is claimed by both Denmark and Canada .
Pack ice and strong currents from the Arctic into the Atlantic Ocean make the strait and neighboring waters risky for shipping. In August, however, it is open to icebreakers . Before 1948, only five ships were registered that had successfully navigated the road.
Surname
Denmark and Canada officially recognized the name of the road after the British navigator , admiral and polar explorer George Nares in 1964 . Nares was the first to travel the full length of the road on an expedition in 1875 and 1876, refuting the theory of the ice-free Arctic Ocean .
