The Natura 2000 area Hundsheimer Berge is a protected area (area number: AT1214000) designated in accordance with Directive 92/43 / EEC (Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive) ("FFH Directive" for short), which is responsible for the conservation of several habitat types and species serves.

location

"Zwergenloch" cave north of Hundsheim am Hexenberg

The protected area is located south of the Danube in the east of the Austrian state of Lower Austria in the district of Bruck an der Leitha . The communities of Berg , Hainburg an der Donau , Hundsheim , Prellenkirchen and Wolfsthal have a share in this. It has a size of 2,135 hectares and is located in the continental biogeographical region of Austria at an altitude between 135 and 481 meters above sea level.

The " Spitzerberg " nature reserve and most of the " Braunsberg-Hundsheimerberg " nature reserve are integrated into the "Hundsheimer Berge" Natura 2000 area and take up around 18% of the Natura 2000 area.

Legal basis

The legal basis for the Natura 2000 area is the Habitats Directive of the European Union and Section 31 of the Ordinance on European Protected Areas of the Lower Austrian provincial government.

The legal basis for the nature reserves located in the Natura 2000 area is anchored in Section 2 (2) (“Braunsberg-Hundsheimerberg” nature reserve) and in Section 2 (36) (“Spitzerberg” nature reserve) of the ordinance on nature reserves and in the Lower Austrian Nature Conservation Act.

The two nature reserves were declared biogenetic reserves by the Council of Europe in 1989 . Resolutions (76) 17 of March 15, 1976 and (79) 9 of May 29, 1979 of the Council of Europe on the establishment of a “European Network of Biogenetic Reserves” form the basis.

For the species great pasque flower ( Pulsatilla grandis ), Eurasian grasshopper ( Stenobothrus eurasius ), Hainburger feather carnation ( Dianthus lumnitzeri ) and wolf's foot spider ( Serratula lycopifolia ), the EU Commission requested Austria to designate it in a letter of May 30, 2013 Natura 2000 area “Hundsheimer Berge”. Previously, the inadequate designation of Natura 2000 areas for the conservation of species in Annex II of the Habitats Directive had also been dealt with in a study.

Conservation goals

The regional ordinance stipulates the maintenance or restoration of a favorable conservation status of the designated natural habitat types of Annex I of the Habitats Directive and of the habitats of the significantly occurring designated animal and plant species in Annex II of the Habitats Directive.
