history

In 1180 a "Heinrich von Oberngesaezze" was mentioned, Ministeriale of the Bishop of Bamberg. The place name is derived from the Middle High German Gesaezze , which means residence, Oberngesaezze therefore upper residence. In 1393 the place fell to the burgraves of Nuremberg both with regard to the appointment of the pastor and in terms of feudal law and was at that time a border town of the county. With the community edict (early 19th century) Obernsees was assigned to the Truppach tax district . A little later the rural community of Obernsee was formed, to which the places Braunersberg , Friedrichsruh and Gries belonged. It was under the administration and jurisdiction of the Bayreuth Regional Court and had an area of 5.133 km². Böhnershof was only founded in the municipality at the end of the 19th century.

A school was built in the 1850s and lasted until 1973. In 1861 the place received market rights. He played a particularly important role in the cattle trade. With the First World War this trade ended and could not be revived afterwards. From 1904 to 1974 Obernsees was accessible via the Bayreuth – Hollfeld railway line .

On May 1, 1978, Obernsees was incorporated into the Mistelgau community as part of the regional reform in Bavaria .

The drilling results of the Bavarian State Geological Office in 1983 represented a deep cut in the local history: Immediately west of Obernsees, thermal water was encountered at a depth of 1280 meters. In 1997/98 the "Warmbad Obernsees" was built at this point, which was expanded in 2001/02 due to the large influx. In 2007, the major Dutch investor Bud Schnapman proposed the construction of a holiday village with 200 houses. Since November 2014 this holiday village has been built with a few changes. 44 houses have currently been built (as of July 2020).
