The rowing competition in the men's quadruple sculls as part of the rowing regatta of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was held from August 6 to 11, 2016 in the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon . 40 athletes in ten teams competed.

The competition, which was held over the Olympic rowing distance of 2000 meters, began with two preliminary runs of five boats each. The first and second placed teams in the preliminary stages qualified directly for the final, all six remaining teams had to go to the repechage . Here the first two teams qualified again for the final, while the third to sixth placed teams of the repechage made it into the B final for 7th to 10th place. In the final on August 11th, six teams competed for Olympic medals. The finals had to be postponed by one day due to bad weather conditions on August 10th.

The teams qualified for the next round are highlighted in light green.

The final was won by the German selection with Karl Schulze , Philipp Wende , Lauritz Schoof and Hans Gruhne, with a slight surprise. The quartet had won the world championship title last year and, apart from Gruhne, had also won the gold medal in London four years earlier, but their season was very mixed. With a strong start, the quartet was able to get a boat length ahead of the favored Australians and save a small lead over the finish line. The Estonians rowed across the finish line as the third-placed team.

At the international qualification regatta in Lucerne on May 24, 2016, the teams from Russia and Canada qualified first. However, the rower Sergei Fedorowzew from the Russian quadruple was subjected to a training control by the Russian anti-doping agency on May 17th, which resulted in a positive result on the prohibited drug trimetazidine on June 16th . After the B sample was also positive on June 30, 2016 in the presence of the athlete concerned, all results with his participation were deleted retrospectively up to the day of the control. The team from New Zealand, who had finished third in the qualifying regatta, moved up to the group of Olympic participants.

In the British team, the nominated rower Graeme Thomas was substituted by the substitute rower Jack Beaumont before the run-up . Thomas had already arrived with a flu-like illness and had to be deregistered on site.
