The Player is a German crime film by Jürgen Brauer from 2002. It is the 238th episode in the film series Polizeiruf 110 and the 19th case for the investigator duo Schmücke and Schneider .
action
A passerby calls the police at night after allegedly finding a dead person on the street. But after the investigators Schmücke and Schneider have arrived, nothing can be seen except for a blood stain. Since the dead person is said to have been lying next to a car belonging to the jewelery company "Silberstreif", the investigators asked the owner Dieter Grossmann. They learn from him that the car was driven by his partner Christian Dietzel, who was supposed to be on a business trip, but has now apparently disappeared. The next day it is discovered that the jewelery company “Silberstreif” was broken into and the safe was cleared. Although it looks as if the perpetrator or perpetrators of Dietzel got the keys to the store in order to break in, there are also indications of disagreements between Dietzel and his partner Grossmann. Based on a photo, the investigators even suspect a relationship between this and Dietzel's wife.
One possible motive for Dietzel's disappearance is found when Schmücke and Schneider deal with his gambling addiction. On the evening of his disappearance he had won 40,000 euros, which the music producer Kurt Seifert noticed, who left the casino immediately after Dietzel. Schmücke checks him out and finds out that he has set up his own private gaming club that plays for fairly high stakes. Seifert admits that Dietzel had given him his winnings to pay off his debts, but he had nothing to do with Dietzel's disappearance. Schmücke continues to focus on Thea Dietzel, who has meanwhile presented a text message that she allegedly received from her husband. Due to his gambling addiction, Dietzel not only deprived his family of all their savings, but also embezzled money in the company, which explains the discrepancies with Grossmann. For jewelry that would be reason enough to get the unwelcome player out of the way. However, he finds another explanation. A check of Dietzel's accounts shows that four days ago his son Daniel's savings account was almost emptied. He wants to ask Daniel about it, but he doesn't find him. In contrast, Schmücke and Schneider watch Thea Dietzel reverently throw a bouquet of flowers into the hall. Thereupon they let divers search the river at this point and actually find the company car with the body of Christian Dietzel. There is also the jewelry from the company safe, which he stole himself in order to gamble it away.
Schmücke and Schneider confront Thea Dietzel with the results of the investigation and she confesses to ambushing her husband and killing him. But the investigators realize that she only wants to protect her son, because Daniel had knocked down his father out of anger after he had noticed that he had secretly withdrawn the money he had saved from the savings account. He told his mother about it and, assuming her husband was dead, she dragged him into the car and dumped him in the river.
criticism
The critics of the television magazine TV Spielfilm gave it a medium rating (thumbs to the side) and found: “Should be fulfilled - but not a bit original”.
