Reka Zsofia Lazăr-Szabo (Hungarian Szabó-Lázár Réka; born March 11, 1967 in Brașov ) is a former Romanian foil fencer . She was a two-time world champion.

Career

Reka Lazăr-Szabo worked for the fencing department of Steaua Bucharest . In 1987 she won silver with the Romanian team at the World Championships in Lausanne . In 1988 at her first Olympic Games in Seoul, she finished 21st in the foil singles. In 1992 in Barcelona, ​​the Romanian team won bronze behind the teams from Italy and Germany, in the individual they reached sixth place. In 1993 she moved to Germany with her husband Vilmoș Szabo and their son Matyas . She then started for TSV Bayer Dormagen .

In 1994 she won the World Championships in Athens both individually and with the team. In 1995 she became individual European champion in Keszthely and won silver at the World Championships in The Hague behind the Italian team but ahead of the German. When she took part in the Olympic Games in Atlanta for the third time , the result was again the Italian, ahead of the Romanian, ahead of the German team, and she finished 19th in the individual.

In 1997 she won silver with the team at the World Championships in Cape Town , also in 1998 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, at the European Championships in 1998 in Plovdiv, she won bronze in the individual. At the European Championships in 1999 in Bolzano, she won silver with the team. In 2000 she won silver in the individual and with the team at the European Championships in Funchal . At the Olympic Games in Sydney Lazar-Szabo took eighth place in the foil singles. In 2001 she won bronze with the team at the European Championships in Koblenz , also at the 2002 World Championships in Lisbon and at the 2003 World Championships in Havana.

After her active career, Reka Lazar-Szabo worked briefly as a trainer at TSV Bayer Dormagen. Reka Lazăr-Szabo has been a full-time competitive sports coordinator for fencing in North Rhine-Westphalia since September 2013. In October 2016 she was elected Vice President Sport and Youth Sport of the German Fencing Association .
