Robert Graf (politician)

Robert Graf (born July 17, 1929 in New York ; † January 24, 1996 in Vienna ) was an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ).

Life

In 1935, Robert Graf returned to Austria with his parents in Burgenland . He attended the commercial school in Oberwart and was an innkeeper on the Eisenberg from 1950 to 1972 .

In 1972 he worked briefly as an export merchant. From 1973 to 1979 he was managing director of the Austrian business publishing house . In 1989, after his retirement as Federal Minister, he took this position again.

Graf suffered a severe stroke in October 1993 . He was married and had two children.

From 1961 to 1966 he was a member of the Burgenland state parliament .

Graf was a member of the National Council from 1966 to 1986 . From July 1979 he was the ÖVP's spokesman for the economy . In 1969 he also became Vice President of the Economic Association in the Austrian Chamber of Commerce . In 1986 Graf wanted to retire from politics, he did not appear on any election list for a mandate in the 1986 National Council election.

Nevertheless, he took over the office of Federal Minister for Economic Affairs in the newly formed coalition of SPÖ and ÖVP in 1987 . Due to a public discussion of personnel within the ÖVP, he resigned from his position on April 10, 1989. His successor was Wolfgang Schüssel .
