Favorite Palace is a baroque pleasure and hunting palace in Ludwigsburg in Baden-Württemberg . It is located on a hill in the Favoritepark in the direct axis north of the Ludwigsburg residential palace .

history

It was built in the years 1717–1723 by Duke Eberhard Ludwig according to the designs of the court architect Donato Giuseppe Frisoni in the Baroque style.

Favorite Palace had already been designed as a pure hunting lodge and summer villa with a beautiful view of the Ludwigsburg residential palace .

In 1748 the palace served as the backdrop for a magnificent firework display at the wedding of Duke Carl Eugen with Elisabeth Friederike Sophie von Brandenburg-Bayreuth .

Classicist transformation

From 1806, King Friedrich I had the palace gardens transformed into a zoo with game, chamois and deer. Architect Nikolaus Friedrich von Thouret renovated the interior of the palace in a classical style.

In the 20th century, the castle fell into oblivion and was in a poor state of construction until, from around 1980, it was fundamentally restored and furnished with valuable furniture.

Todays use

Favorite Castle has been open to the public again since 1983. It is one of the state's own monuments and is looked after by the State Palaces and Gardens of Baden-Württemberg .

TV show Nachtcafé

The castle became known nationwide since 1987 through the television program Nachtcafé with Wieland Backes of the Südwestrundfunk (SWR) Stuttgart. The talk show was recorded on Thursdays and broadcast on SWR Friday evenings. When Michael Steinbrecher took over the moderation in January 2015, the recording was made in the SWR studio E-Werk in Baden-Baden.
