Geographical location

Schwarzenau is located in the Waldviertel in Lower Austria and is traversed by the German Thaya . The area of ​​the market town covers 28.12 square kilometers. 19.69 percent of the area is forested.

The community consists of the cadastral communities of Ganz, Großhaselbach, Hausbach, Limpfings, Modlisch, Schlag, Schwarzenau and Stögersbach.

history

On November 4, 1875 near Schwarzenau on a 10 meter high embankment on which the Franz-Josefs-Bahn ran in a curve with a 5 ‰ gradient towards a bridge, passenger train No. 9 Vienna Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof derailed at around 12:30 a.m. - Prague along the tangent of the curve arc because a section of rail had been loosened. At least nine people died.

The communities of Schwarzenau, Großhaselbach, Hausbach and Stögersbach were merged on January 1, 1972, the new community was still called Schwarzenau.

Population development

According to the results of the 2001 census, there were 1591 inhabitants. In 1991 the market town had 1714 inhabitants, 1981 1929 and in 1971 1910 inhabitants.
