Sergei Alexandrowitsch Ustjugow ( Russian Сергей Александрович Устюгов ; born April 8, 1992 in Meschduretschenski , Khanty and Mansi Autonomous Okrug / Ugra ) is a Russian cross-country skier .

Career

At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2011 and 2012, Ustyugov won a total of five gold and one silver. In January 2013 he celebrated his World Cup debut in La Clusaz , before he secured his first top ten place in the World Cup with fourth place in Sochi a few days later . Shortly thereafter, he won the bronze medal at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2013 in Val di Fiemme as the final runner in the Russian cross-country relay . In the 2013/2014 season he was able to celebrate his first podium place with a third place in the freestyle sprint in Davos and finally his first World Cup victory - also in the freestyle sprint - in Nové Město. At the U23 World Championships in 2014 in Val di Fiemme , he won gold in the sprint and silver over 15 km classic. He finished fifth in the sprint at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. He finished the season in 11th place in the overall World Cup and sixth in the sprint classification.

In the 2014/15 season, Ustjugow won in Otepää together with Alexei Petuchow in the team sprint and took third place in the 15 km freestyle and second place in the sprint in Rybinsk . At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2015 in Falun , he came in 28th place over 15 km freestyle and 16th place in the sprint. He finished the season in sixth place in the Sprint World Cup and second in the U23 classification. After 21st place at the beginning of the 2015/16 season at the Nordic Opening in Ruka , he took third place at the 2016 Tour de Ski . It took second place in the sprint stages in Lenzerheide and Oberstdorf . At the following World Cup in Nové Město he came back on the podium with third place over 15 km freestyle and second place with the relay. In February 2016 he won his second individual World Cup victory in the 15 km mass start race in Falun. At the end of the season he was second overall in the Ski Tour Canada . He came on the podium five times and got two wins. He achieved sixth place in the Sprint World Cup, fifth place in the Distance World Cup and fourth place in the overall World Cup. In March 2016 he was the Russian champion over 15 km classic and sprint.

At the beginning of the 2016/17 season, Ustjugow finished 35th in the World Cup mini tour in Lillehammer . He achieved third place in the 10 km freestyle. This was followed by a second place in La Clusaz with the relay and a victory in the sprint in Davos . At the Tour de Ski 2016/17 he won five of the seven stages and came in second once and thus reached first place in the overall standings. At the following World Cups he achieved placements outside the ten. In mid-February 2017, he came back on the World Cup podium for the first time in Otepää with third place in the sprint. At the season highlight of the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti , he won the silver medal in the 50 km mass start race, in the sprint and with the relay and the gold medal in the skiathlon and together with Nikita Krjukow in the team sprint. In March 2017 he came third in the sprint in Drammen and at the end of the season he reached seventh place in the distance world cup, fifth place in the sprint world cup and second place in the overall world cup. In the same month he became Russian champion in skiathlon, sprint and over 15 km freestyle. In April 2017 he won the Ugra Ski Marathon over 50 km freestyle. After 23rd place in the Ruka Triple at the beginning of the 2017/18 season, he took second place in the sprint in Lillehammer and second place over 15 km freestyle in Davos. At the Tour de Ski 2017/18 , which he ended prematurely, he won the sprint in Lenzerheide and took second place in the pursuit there. In February 2018 he came in third place over 50 km classic at Toblach-Cortina . The following month he became Russian champion in skiathlon and sprint in Syktyvkar . He finished the season in 12th place in the overall World Cup and Sprint World Cup and in tenth place in the Distance World Cup.

In the 2018/19 season Ustjugow came second in Ulricehamn with the relay and second place in the Tour de Ski 2018/19 . He won the stage over 15 km freestyle in Toblach and also took second and third place twice. At the season highlight of the Nordic World Ski Championships 2019 in Seefeld in Tyrol , he won the silver medal with the relay. He finished the season in 17th place in the Distance World Cup and in tenth place in the overall World Cup. At the beginning of the following season he achieved tenth place in the Ruka Triple, second place over 15 km freestyle in Davos and won in Lillehammer with the relay. At the Tour de Ski 2019/20 he finished second with two wins and three second places, and at the end of the season he finished eighth in both the overall World Cup and the Distance World Cup.

Doping and suspension

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided in early 2018 that he would be banned from the 2018 Winter Games. The lock was triggered by the McLaren report .
