The Express (publisher's spelling: EXPRESS ) is a regional tabloid based in Cologne , which is published daily by M. DuMont Schauberg . In the regions of Cologne, Düsseldorf and Bonn it appears with its own local section; But it is also available in the surrounding area ( Aachen , Mönchengladbach , Duisburg ) without its own local section. The sold circulation is 64,896 copies, a decrease of 79.8 percent since 1998.

history

Alfred Neven DuMont , the founding editor, came up with the idea of a tabloid in-house . In December 1963 he read in his own Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger that Springer-Verlag and the Rheinische Post wanted to bring a joint tabloid, the Mittag , to the market in Düsseldorf and Cologne in February 1964 . This project was the reason for the publisher's own tabloid. The goal was to sell 30,000 copies in the founding year; 100,000 copies came onto the market as early as 1965, and the trend is rising.

The first edition of the Express appeared as a free copy on February 29, 1964 and reported with the headline “Free flight to death” on the plane crash near Innsbruck, in which Walter Hausmann from Cologne was also killed. Regular sales began on March 2, 1964, with an initial circulation of 30,000 copies. The Bonn EXPRESS was added in October 1965, followed by Düsseldorf EXPRESS in October 1967 , after the loss-making tabloid Mittag was discontinued on September 20, 1967 and left 285,000 readers. On July 1, 1973, the first issue of the Sonntag Express appeared . DuMont's third-degree nephew, Christian DuMont Schütte , has been co-editor since November 1999 . This function was also held by Alfred Neven DuMont's son Konstantin Neven DuMont , who was dismissed in November 2010 after family disputes.

The direct competitor Bild has a sold circulation of 17,436 copies in Cologne compared to 63,373 of the Express main edition Cologne / Bonn (2012), the total edition of the Express brought it to 349,776 copies. This makes the Express the market leader among the daily newspapers and tabloids in Cologne. This market leader position was in jeopardy when, as part of the Cologne newspaper war, the free and advertisement-financed daily 20 Minuten appeared in Cologne on December 13, 1999 with a circulation of 150,000 copies. Both the Cologne Higher Regional Court (judgment of May 1, 2001) and the Federal Court of Justice (judgment of November 20, 2003) dismissed the DuMont publishing house's lawsuit against 20 Minuten , because free commuter newspapers such as 20 Minuten like established daily newspapers are due to the fundamental right of Freedom of the press are protected and this takes precedence over the law against unfair competition , as long as no existence-threatening effects are proven.

Since October 2018, the Express has been receiving its national content from the editorial network Germany .

distribution

The Express and its Sunday edition are largely distributed through individual sales in newspaper stores and through the publisher's own newspaper machines , many of which, however, were dismantled in summer 2018. In contrast to Bild am Sonntag , the Sunday edition is also distributed via these newspaper machines. Unlike many other tabloids, you can also subscribe to the Express , whereby delivery is only carried out within the distribution area of the Cologne newspaper group by newspaper delivery staff.

Edition

The Express is one of the German daily newspapers with the greatest loss of circulation in recent years. The number of copies sold has fallen by an average of 7.9% per year over the past 10 years. Last year it decreased by 8.1%. It is currently 64,896 copies. The share of subscriptions in the circulation sold is 25.3 percent.

Development of the number of copies sold

In addition to the complete edition, the editions of the editions Cologne / Bonn (50,228 copies) and Düsseldorf (10,837 copies) are shown separately.

Often the front pages of the various regional editions have different headlines relating to the respective local section. The local dialect ( Kölsch ) is often used in the headlines and captions of the local sections . The regional character of the newspaper is also evident in the publication of obituaries (sometimes also formulated as “op kölsch”) .

Group of companies

The group also publishes the Sonntag Express and the daily newspapers Kölnische Rundschau , Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger and Mitteldeutsche Zeitung (from 2006 to 2013 also the Frankfurter Rundschau ). The attempt by the DuMont publishing house to also establish a tabloid newspaper in Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony with its headquarters in Halle (Saale) and local parts in Leipzig , Magdeburg , Erfurt and Gera was terminated in 1995 with increasing circulation. Only a few weeks after the Central German Express was discontinued, the Axel Springer Verlag discontinued the subscription newspaper Hallesches Tageblatt, which was also published in Halle (Saale) . The southern Saxony-Anhalt only has the tabloid newspaper Bild and the subscription newspaper Mitteldeutsche Zeitung .

The Express appeared in 1990 after the fall of the Berlin Wall, initially with the Cologne edition in Halle (Saale); this was also the time of the peak of the circulation with over 450,000 copies sold. Later it appeared under the title Neue Presse - Express (1990 to 1992), published jointly with the Madsack publishing company and with local editions in Leipzig, Magdeburg, Erfurt and Gera. After a decision by the Cartel Office, it was compulsorily separated from the publishing company Madsack under the sole responsibility of the DuMont Group as Mitteldeutscher Express (1992 to 1995) with the local parts Halle (Saale), Leipzig and Magdeburg. Alfred Neven DuMont acted as editor.

Journalist awards

The special prize of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung at the German Local Journalist Prize went to the express reporters Robert Baumanns and Jens Hartmann for the SoKo EXPRESS section in 2000 . This mediates between citizens and authorities or companies. In 2009, the Association of the German Internet Industry (eco) honored the mobile presence of express.de together with the Frankfurter Rundschau, the Kölnische Rundschau, the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung and the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger. In 2011, the Kausa Media Prize awarded the express volunteer Mehmet Ata the special prize.
