Steinhausen is a suburb of the city of Bad Schussenried in the Biberach district in Upper Swabia . The place became famous for its pilgrimage church Steinhausen at the southeast foot of an old moraine.

history

Steinhausen is located at the eastern end of the Steinhauser Ried in the headwaters of the Schussen . The place name with the ending in -hausen refers to an Alemannic settlement in the Merovingian period. A first documentary mention can be found in 1239. On February 17, 1365, Schenk Hermann von Winterstetten zu Otterswang sold residents, bailiwick, jurisdiction, forests, meadows, gardens, houses, mills, inn and fishing rights to the Schussenried monastery for 800 pounds of Heller. Already on July 27, 1363, the monastery of Dietrich von Rammingen zu Schwarzach had acquired a church in Steinhausen for 250 pounds of Heller.

In the following 408 years the place belonged to the monastery. In 1726 Abbot Didacus Ströbele had the church rebuilt in a baroque style.

In 1803 the monastery area including Steinhausen fell to the Counts Sternberg-Manderscheid, and in 1806 to the Kingdom of Württemberg . At first Steinhausen belonged to the Oberamt Waldsee , in 1938 the community was incorporated into the district of Biberach . With the administrative reform of January 1st, 1972 Steinhausen (official name Steinhausen bei Schussenried ) lost its independence and was incorporated into Bad Schussenried.
