sunshine live (also sl; ssl; or radio sunshine live ) is a private nationwide radio broadcaster with a focus on electronic dance music . The station began operating under its current name on June 20, 1997 in Schwetzingen and is now based in Mannheim . Since December 13, 2016, most programs have been broadcast from the top floor of the Das Schloss shopping center in Berlin. The old studio in Mannheim, which had been in the Kauffmannmühle in the Hafenstrasse in the Jungbusch district since January 30, 2006 , was closed and moved to a smaller studio in the Mannheim Music Park . Some shipments will continue to be made from there.

The sender's mascot is Clubby , a light blue baby head with headphones and a nose piercing.

In June 2016, Sunshine announced live that VHF broadcasting in the Rhine-Neckar area and the move to Berlin on July 1, 2016 were discontinued .

At all other times, Sunshine broadcasts live mix shows from international DJs. Depending on the program, the set is restricted to a certain genre. All programs during this time are put together and presented by the DJs themselves, without the influence of the station's music department.

In the night from Sunday to Monday ran until April 29, 2007 22:00 to 2:00 the shipment adult music . This was compiled and presented by DJ Taucher . The music selection was mostly non-commercial electronic music as well as excerpts from his latest sets. Occasionally Taucher also had guests on his show. The program was taken out of the program surprisingly and without notice, which led to a large audience protest. DJ Taucher only found out about the cancellation shortly before his last broadcast and moderated for several minutes, crying. According to the broadcaster, the reason for the discontinuation was the introduction of the Sixty Radio Show in the Sunday afternoon program and the low number of listeners.

Live broadcasts

Sunshine live is represented at various events which are broadcast live on the radio. This includes the regular Welcome-To-The-Club- Party. These broadcasts usually take place on the nights from Friday to Saturday and from Saturday to Sunday. Exceptions on other days can be found in the station's program (e.g. from trade fairs). In the summer of 2009, live broadcasts from the RIU Palace (Mallorca) with DJ Klubbingman , a sunshine live DJ, took place every Tuesday .

history

Previous programs

The direct predecessor of sunshine live was Radio Sunshine , which initially carried the name RNO Radio (for the Rhine-Neckar-Odenwald region ) and at times the mixed form RNO Radio Sunshine and broadcast a hit and oldie program. It went on air on October 1, 1994 at the beginning of the second licensing period of the Baden-Württemberg private broadcaster from Schwetzingen. The organizing company of sunshine live still bears the old name RNO Rhein-Neckar-Odenwald Radio GmbH & Co. KG today .

Several local broadcasters preceded this program. On the one hand, the radio station Wachenburg , which is part of the Weinheimer Nachrichten , started broadcasting on October 1, 1987 on the 100.7 MHz frequency from the eponymous Weinheimer Wachenburg and later switched to the 107.7 MHz frequency. At the end of 1992 it became the oldie station Rhein-Neckar with RTL Radio as a supporting program and at the same time got the frequency 106.1 MHz from the station Heidelberg-Königstuhl .

Another forerunner program was the Rheintal Radio from Schwetzingen, which started on April 8, 1988 and was broadcast from the studios that were later also used by sunshine live. The station initially took over the main program Radio Regenbogen , later the oldie station Rhein-Neckar. It was broadcast from the Wiesloch transmitter on the 107.4 MHz frequency, which was later changed to 107.1 MHz.

The two channels merged until 1994 and Schwetzingen was selected as the new studio location. For the second licensing period of Baden-Württemberg's private broadcasters from October 1994, the station, which has now been declared a local station for the Rhine-Neckar-Odenwald region, also received the 25 kW basic network transmitter frequency 102.1 MHz from the Reisenbach telecommunications tower and the 107.9 MHz frequency from the filler transmitter in Mosbach and expanded its transmission area to include the Odenwald in Baden .

The two Odenwald frequencies previously broadcast the program launched by Radio TON on September 18, 1989 (at times Radio 7 Radio TON and from 1992 Radio TON Gold ) from Bad Mergentheim , whose broadcasting area was divided up for the new licensing period. While the Neckar-Odenwald district was allocated to the broadcasting area of the new RNO Radio , the remaining broadcasting area was merged with that of Heilbronner Radio Regional . The two stations were merged to form Radio TON Regional , the forerunner of today's Radio Ton .

The technical structure of today's local program was achieved. After the station had little success with the hit and oldies program, it was decided to restart the program as a youth station while retaining the part of the name “Sunshine”. Since there was previously no such program in the entire broadcasting area, it was expected that such a format would have a better chance of success. After the last broadcast of the old program ended on June 17, 1997 at 8 p.m., there was a program loop on the frequencies for a few days until the sunshine live program started on June 20, 1997 at 3 p.m.

1997–1999: youth broadcasting time

The new program started with the then 14-year-old Sarah Thumb von Neuburg (now presenter MDR Jump in Halle (Saale)) and her talk-call-in show Sarah Live . The music orientation corresponded to the CHR format. The first two tracks played were The Notorious BIG - Hypnotize and 2Pac - California Love . Even Rammstein and pop music ran in the rotation, with the exception of boy groups . Over time, the musical direction was adapted more and more to the techno genre.

Well-known programs from the youth broadcasting era:

  • Roundabout
  • Shut up
  • Sarah-Live, later X-Ray - three-hour youth talk show on Friday afternoons
  • Flashlight
  • Jungle
  • Live date
  • Backstage
  • Computerworld
  • Power on Monday

1999–2000: Consolidation of the format

The tender for a regional youth station in Baden-Württemberg was won by a consortium led by the Mannheim station Radio Regenbogen , in which RNO Radio was also involved as a partner. In order to quickly assign a 24-hour program to the license, sunshine live was switched to these newly acquired frequencies in November 1999 .

The music program at that time was mostly dance-heavy, but still used a lot from other areas of the music world. About this aspect there was a dispute among the shareholders, which led to the founding of the radio station bigFM , as sunshine live rejected reformatting to more black music and less dance.

Sunshine live broadcast from the end of March 2000 (after the bigFM program loop was activated) temporarily exclusively on the VHF frequencies in the Rhine-Neckar triangle because the satellite broadcast (ADR) was temporarily required to feed the new bigFM transmitter. Since the middle of April 2000 sunshine live can be received again without interruption via Astra.

Well-known programs
  • Not Alone
  • Flashlight
  • Track check
  • Labelite
  • Crash factory
  • RPR maximum

The program Flashlight was discontinued in 2002, a special broadcast took place on December 17, 2005.

2000–2015: Expansion of the transmission area and formatting

After the company shares in Schimper-Verlag (Schwetzingen) were taken over by the radio group Eurocast (shareholders: Radio PSR , Hit Radio FFH , Radio SAW , 94.3 rs2 and other stations of the radio group Regiocast ), formatting can be observed.

At times, were call-in contests included in the daily program to win new listeners and increase revenue. The programs were produced by the same company that was responsible for the call-in television channel 9Live . However, since media analyzes showed no corresponding effect and regular listeners criticized the call-in elements massive, the broadcaster discontinued them. The nightly call-in-show was subsequently only broadcast on late Monday evening and was finally discontinued. All that remains is a call-in quiz that is broadcast daily at different times and is similar to the television speed quiz format (as of September 2012).

Since January 2007, Sunshine has been broadcasting a German version of the Vonyc Sessions live with Paul van Dyk on Thursday evening. In February 2007 the internationally known program Mellomania Deluxe was replaced by a program in cooperation with the Ministry of Sound label . According to the broadcaster, this was mainly due to financial reasons. On April 29, 2007, the Sunday program Adult Music ran with its international audience for the last time.

In 2007 Sunshine celebrated its tenth anniversary live on October 2nd in the Kinki Palace in Sinsheim on a 3000 m² dance floor. A specially launched anthem reached the German single charts after about two weeks and jumped from 0 to 75th place.

During the new mobile phone boom of the Apple iPhone and the Android and Windows Mobile platforms, the private radio working group developed various mobile apps with which Sunshine Live can be received via UMTS or EDGE .

Logo with the old claim

For the New Year of 2010, Sunshine Live replaced all bumpers and jingles from the radio program and replaced the slogan “we are among you” with “electronic music radio”. Before the start of the program, traffic jams were switched to “Streetscan”, News to “News” (every half hour “Newsscan”) and “Weatherscan”. New talkovers were created for the moderators and short flash recordings, for example 30-second music recordings.

Sunshine Live broadcasts from various German and Spanish discos at regular intervals. Live broadcasts from the Prater in Bochum or the Kinki Palace in Sinsheim take place regularly in midsummer . Other club visits include the Volkspalast in Leipzig or the Riu Palace on Mallorca.

Move to Berlin

Since the announcement of the move to Berlin in June 2016, enormous further changes have been observed in the program. With the opening of the studio in Berlin, it was designed as a technically leading location and the Mannheim studio is referred to as an outdoor studio after its move within Mannheim. The morning show BPM, the daily program until 4 p.m., as well as all recorded programs are run from Berlin, almost all live DJ programs, i.e. starting with DJs after work up to the programs in the late evening, as well as most of them of the weekend live program (Classics, Charts, Connected) come from Mannheim.

On October 2, 2016, the 1000th and last regular Welcome to the Club broadcast took place. Between December 3rd and 10th, the hourly news broadcast was finally removed from the program.

In 2017 a partnership was established with the broadcaster Ibiza White FM . In addition to a weekly two-hour program, the Sunshine Live FM radio show , which is produced by DJ Falk on Sunshine Live and broadcast on Sundays on Ibiza White FM, there has also been a program produced by Ibiza White FM since June 10, 2017, on Sunshine It will be broadcast live under the name Ibiza White FM Saturday morning before the Classics. reception

VHF

As the first VHF frequency outside of Baden-Württemberg, the Berlin-Brandenburg Media Authority assigned the 94.9 MHz frequency to sunshine live in Templin, Brandenburg, on July 1, 2010 . However, the distribution was stopped again on May 1, 2012.

Since December 15th, 2015 sunshine can be received live in and around Rostock on 92.4 MHz. This was made possible by the allocation of a free VHF frequency by the state media authority Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The station could be received terrestrially via VHF in parts of Baden-Württemberg , Bavaria , Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate until June 30, 2016 .

On June 30, 2016, the local station frequencies were transferred to the new rock program Regenbogen 2 .
