The tournament started with a group stage that consisted of two groups of four teams. The two best teams in each group made it to the next round (semi-finals) and played the winner in a knockout process.

If selected teams were invited to the tournament at the first edition, then the sporting performance in the league was decided. The four best teams from the MLS that did not qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League in 2008 qualified for the 2009 competition .

From the Primera División, the best teams from the combined Aperatura and Clausura evaluation of a year took part, as long as these teams were not qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League .

The winner of the first edition of the competition received a prize of one million US dollars.
