Syktywkar ( Russian Сыктывка́р , Komi Сыктывкар , scientific transliteration Syktyvkar ) is the capital of the Komi Republic in the Russian federal district of northwestern Russia , with 235,006 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city lies at the mouth of the Syssola in the Wytschegda . Syktywkar is located almost 1000 km northeast of the Russian capital Moscow .
history
At the beginning of the 17th century the settlement Syssolskoje (Russian Сысольское ) was located here , in 1780 the settlement became the city of Ust-Syssolsk (Russian Усть-Сысольск ) and was a place of exile in the Vologda governorate . In 1921 the city became the administrative center of the newly created Komi Autonomous Oblast . From 1929 to 1936 the city was part of the Northern Krais and from December 5, 1936 the capital of the Komi ASSR . The city got its current name in the Komi language in 1930 after the river Syssola (komi: Syktyw). The name means "city on the Syssola".
