Senec (Hungarian Szenc - until 1907 Szempc ; German Wartberg ) is a city in western Slovakia .
It is located about 25 kilometers northeast of Bratislava and is a local center of the Senec district and a popular summer resort for Bratislava residents.
Sunny lakes
Today Senec is a tourist center, especially in summer. By pumping gravel and sand , several bodies of water were created in Senec, which today are called Slnečné jazerá (German literally sun lakes ). In addition to the bathing facilities, there are many accommodation facilities, restaurants and campsites in the recreation area . Almost all water sports can be practiced. The local tennis hall is one of the most beautiful in Slovakia.
history
The city is an old settlement area. A Slavic-Avar burial site dates from the 7th and 8th centuries. In the 11th century there was a Romanesque monastery with a church here.
The first source evidence comes from 1252. At that time Senec was part of the Šintava manor. Around 1480 Senec was granted market rights and in 1714 fair rights.
Senec has been one of the most important economic and trading centers in the region since the 17th century.
In 1763, by an order from Maria Theresa, the Collegium oeconomicum (a kind of business university and training center for state administrative staff) was established here, which moved to Tata after a fire in 1776 .
The city belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then became part of the newly formed Czechoslovakia , through the First Vienna Arbitral Award it briefly returned to Hungary from 1938 to 1945.
In the former predominantly Hungarian city (1930: 3165 Hungarians , 1934 Slovaks , 306 Jews , 70 Germans ), Slovak so-called re-emigrants from Hungary and Romania settled in after 1945 .
economy
In Senec, one of the largest logistics parks in Slovakia went into operation from around 2004, in which more than a dozen logistics centers or warehouses of international corporations are closely lined up, such as DHL , Gebrüder Weiss , DSV , Schenker , Lagermax , Metzeler and Kuehne + Nagel . The commercial area was built by real estate developer UBM Development .
Attractions
The old cityscape was largely destroyed by modern developments.
A fortified, originally Gothic parish church from the first half of the 16th century is worth seeing ; it was converted to Baroque style in 1740. There is also a Renaissance building, the so-called "Turkish House", from the 17th century, in which the lower nobility lived. There is also a small museum in the village about the composer Johann Nepomuk Hummel , who worked here for a short time.
City structure
The city is divided into the districts Senec and Svätý Martin , well-known districts are Červený majer and Horný dvor . Due to the location near the capital Bratislava, new settlements such as Mlynský klin or Senec Gardens have emerged in recent years .
