The Convent is a German-Dutch post-punk / new wave band with occasional echoes from psychedelic rock , but also from rock music and pop music in general.

history

Early years

For a long time, Carlo van Putten's main focus of life was in northern Germany , which is why the band was founded in Zeven in 1985 , as all the other members also came from this region.

The band released two singles in 1987 and 1989 ; the second was initially marketed by the band itself and so Red Sunshine Records (later Red Sun Records) with PO Box in Zeven was created; from 1988 in Hambergen because van Putten had moved to Vollersode . The first was recorded with the original line-up, from the second single Nils Cordes was on drums.

The formation began to change and made van Putten the only remaining founding member. The next obvious change began when Jojo Brandt joined in 1991, who took over the guitar and Frank Belau became a rhythm guitarist . On the EP 1995 ( Mocha for the Lions ) was Belau no longer there. Before that (1988-1991) Jojo Brandt was active in the electro-wave project Liquit Dreams together with André Grafert and Pino Redemund and had known van Putten since 1984 when both were members of the progressive rock band Blackout .

Some former band members later continued their music careers elsewhere: Bassist Benjamin Schadow became a founding member of Bernd Begemann & Die Befreiung in 2003 and played a. a. at Rhonda ; Keyboardist Florian Bratmann also worked as a guitarist for Wolf Maahn from 1996 to 2002 and has performed under the pseudonym Erik Fryman since 2010 . Like Martin Bosker and Stefan Bornhorst, he worked on the White Rose Transmission project.

Mark Burgess, The Chameleons and the Albums

Mark Burgess ( The Chameleons ) is still a close friend, great advocate and supporter of the band to this day. He produced parts of the first album from 1993 ( Counting the Stars ) and the complete second album from 1994 ( Tales from the Frozen Forest ). That also worked in the other direction, because Ralf Kirschbaum, next to Jojo Brandt and Burgess always at least involved in the band's productions, had produced their album Spring Blooms Tra-la for Mark Burgess & The Sons of God in 1994 .

On the third album from 1996 ( Crashes Cars & Loveletters ) the native Corsican Yves Altana took part, who later became the drummer for Mark Burgess & The Sons of God and ChameleonsVox.

On the live album from 1998 ( For a Fistful of Deutschmark (Collection of Live Recordings 1992-1997) ) is a cover version ( Less Than Human ) of The Chameleons. During this time, The Convent performed without an independent keyboard player, as Bratmann had left the band in 1992 and Bornhorst did not join until 1999. For this reason, no keyboard player appears in the dedication of the live album from 1998. Jojo Brandt could only occasionally put the guitar aside during the live performances; He played the instrument on the corresponding studio recordings of the period.

On the fourth album from 2001 ( Red Light Melancholy ), Mark Burges produced the last track ( My Honest Life for Lies ), which he had written with van Putten. The band's line-up, which has since changed, was also reflected on the album: “Schoko” Dubielowski occupied the drums, Stefan Bornhorst the keyboard and Benjamin Schadow the bass.

In connection with their own tour in 2002 the band was also a supporter of the Chameleons on their tour; the last appearance took place in October 2002 in Bochum . On their own 2002 album ( About Kings and Queens and Stolen Bicycles ), Carsten Lienke (Bombay Club, Die Tulpen, Cayne) on bass and Rod K on drums, who joined the band in 2001, also appear.

Projects

2002 was the turning point for the band, which did not split up but pursued other projects after the tour:

Carlo van Putten moved to the Netherlands and in the same year co-founded the Dead Guitars , who released their debut album in June 2007 and supported The Mission on their European tour in spring 2008 . In 2003 he was involved in the album Ice Cream Phoenix by The Electric Family by Tom "The Perc" Redecker . Here he met ex-member Ben Schadow , Ralf Kirschbaum and other well-known German musicians again.

Jojo Brandt (as "Herr Brandt"), wife "Sonne" and Stefan Bornhorst (as "Kpt Kork") got involved under the band name Sunandt from 2003, released their debut album Gestern in 2008 and became part of the Die Funkhausgruppe . Brandt also took part in the shoegazing band Seasurfer around 2014/15 and Stefan Bornhorst released some solo albums as "The Silicon Scientist".

Drummer Roland "Rod K" Kaufmann played for Blitzmaschine, Adrian Thomas Band, for Rollo333 (alias Rolf Peters), and Boerney & Die Tri Tops. He and bassist Carsten Lienke (as "Cee Link" or "Basstard") were together in the short-lived The Upsurders and The Pyronix; Carsten Lienke played (also drums) with Connery and electric guitar in the band Alaska .

After a long break from 2002, the band got together again in 2009 - including two concerts in Italy without a keyboard player. More regular appearances began with the band's 30th anniversary in 2016. The band continues to play at relevant festivals and events of the wave and indie scene. Performances planned for 2020 - u. a. auf der Stubnitz - were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

Adrian Borland - In2TheSound

In 1988, following his time with The Sound , Adrian Borland started a solo career. In 1994 The Convent planned to cover the piece Winning and asked Borland what a deep connection arose from: Borland became the band's “special guest” and sang the song himself, also in collaboration with Carlo van Putten. Borland is also the singer of Winning on the 1998 live album, For a Fistful of Deutschmark (Collection of Live Recordings 1992–1997) .

From 1995 Borland was involved in the creation of the first two albums of the joint project White Rose Transmission with Carlo van Putten. The second record 700 Miles of Desert from 1999 is therefore also the last Borland work to be completed during his lifetime. (Borland's last album Harmony and Destruction was posthumously finished and released in 2002.)

One of Borland's last live performances took place in 1994 in Osterholz-Scharmbeck in the Kleinbahnhof (KUZ) cultural center together with The Convent. In honor of Borland, the documentary Walking in the Opposite Direction - Documentary about The Sound & Adrian Borland was shown as a German premiere on April 28, 2018 at the location from 1994 in a neighboring cinema (Oscar) ; Afterwards, the original drummer from The Sound, Mike Dudley, played with the musicians from The Convent at the KUZ as a souvenir.

The event was repeated in principle on February 8, 2020 in the Musichall Worpswede . Carlo van Putten has a strong relationship with Worpswede and has performed without his band members in 2015 with the White Rose Transmission project in the Musichall pub and in 2019 in the immediate vicinity ( Worphausen Café Niels). Mike Dudley and The Convent also continue to perform and are advertised as In2TheSound ; Carlo van Putten came up with this name in order to create a reference to the original The Sound and not infringe any naming rights. They performed under this name in particular in Portugal (January 19, 2019 Porto and July 6, 2019 Lisbon ) and on December 1, 2019 in the Netherlands ( Rotterdam ).

“The past and its tragedies are always with us; but we can save the essence of creativity that produced so many great songs and carry it into the future to keep it alive not only for fans who are still listening, but also for those who have not yet discovered it "

- Mike Dudley, EX-drummer The Sound

Reviews

“CONCLUSION: Whether WHITE ROSE TRANSMISSION, DEAD GUITARS, THE CONVENT or BORN FOR BLISS; all these bands play a variant of dark, disturbing and beguiling music that has nothing to do with standardized gothic rock. "

- Jochen König - White Rose Transmission: Spinning Webs At Night (Review) on musikreviews.de

“With '1986-2016', The Convent has succeeded in creating a well-rounded, diverse album that a rocker can also put on the shelf. For fans of the band, the limited vinyl is a must anyway! "

- Michael, Mike 'Schröder on www.rocktimes.info from October 16, 2016

“In the end there is only one clear CONCLUSION: It really is a real treasure trove - this strictly limited, hand-numbered '1986-2016' vinyl double album by THE CONVENT, for which the Gorbachev saying applies: 'Whoever comes too late punishes him The life!' - or at least the ears. "

- Thoralf Koß (editor-in-chief) on www.musikreviews.de from October 19, 2016
