Trailer Park Sex (short form TPS ) was a German-Argentine metalcore and post-hardcore band from Hamburg - St. Pauli . The band was active from 2009 to 2017 and was part of the DIY movement.

history

The band was founded in May 2009 by Juan Gracia and Lea Swetlana as Trailer Park Sex . The name of the band was an allusion to the song Trailer Park Jesus (English Trailer Park , German " Wohnwagensiedlung ") of the New York band Glassjaw . In 2010 the EP Now or Fucking Never was recorded as a duo at Daily Hero Studios Berlin , produced by Marc Wüstenhagen and mastered by Alex Kloos at Time Tools Mastering in Hanover. Got No Candy and Fucking Nazis in a Beautiful Budapest were released as video singles. The music video Got No Candy was broadcast in 2011 by the national music television iM1 in its program section iM1 Rocks .

During their Now Or Fucking Never Tour in 2012, Trailer Park Sex played on numerous stages in Germany and the surrounding countries, including with Sodom and Deadlock , as well as with the Brazilian band Andralls as part of their Transatlantic Warfare Alliances tour . Also in 2012 the band took part in the Wacken Metal Battle and reached the semi-finals north in Bad Grund. At the Hard Rock Rising - Global Battle of the Bands 2012, the band reached the finals in Hamburg and achieved second place, while they won the voting . At Hard Rock Rising 2013, the band could not compete in the semifinals due to injury.

In early 2013, the band released their first album Struggle . Producer Marc Wüstenhagen, meanwhile with his own studio MAW Recordings, and Alex Kloos from Time Tools Mastering were involved again. Requiem for the Bloodless , We've Got Business and Ain't No Life were released as video singles. The subsequent completely self- booked Strugglin 'The Americas tour brought the band to North and South America; were visited u. a. the USA, Canada, Argentina and Uruguay. Since its inception, the band has made numerous appearances at home and abroad; u. a. Until spring 2013 she gave more than a hundred concerts in Germany and Western Europe, including Belgium, England, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Switzerland and Spain. Some musicians (Zander, Nestler, Hardmann) only joined the band temporarily from 2010 to 2013.

At the end of 2013, Trailer Park Sex released the EP Transatlantic , which was created in collaboration with the Uruguayan band Radical to celebrate the acquittal of the American musician Randy Blythe  - who was accused of manslaughter in the Czech Republic in December 2012 and acquitted in March 2013 . This time regular producer Marc Wüstenhagen took over the mixing and mastering, as well as some guitar and bass parts. Hendrik Schmidt left the band shortly after the creation of this EP.

In January 2015, Trailer Park Sex released the EP From Below ; Run to Hide and Stumbling Through Air were released as video singles. This record marked an expansion in their musical style towards Djent and Alternative Metal . On the one hand, eight-string guitars sounded in these recordings as a novelty, on the other hand, Juan Gracia sang songs for the first time that managed completely without shouts. Later that year they took part in the Djent and Progressive Metal Euroblast Festival  X with Animals as Leaders , Monuments and TesseracT , among others , and played individual gigs in Germany and abroad. At the end of 2015, Kain Nod joined the band as the new bassist and the former bassist Roman Karius switched to guitar. Just weeks later, guitarist Emily Casey left the band for personal reasons.

In early 2016, Trailer Park Sex with At the Gates , Heaven Shall Burn and Katatonia became part of the Metaltowns Festival in Gothenburg, Sweden. They then toured Poland, where they also played at the Materiafest festival with Textures , Totem, Modern Day Babylon and Materia. Further highlights in 2016 were appearances at the With Full Force Festival (headliners Five Finger Death Punch , Slayer , Amon Amarth ), the English band Hacktivist on the Out of the Box Tour and the Ukrainian band Jinjer on the "King of Everything Tour" .

In mid-2017, the band split from the former bassist and guitarist Roman Karius. Juan Gracia then took over the guitar again. In September 2017 the band broke up and the remaining band members founded the alternative metal and Djent band Eve of Alana ( EoA for short ) in Hamburg .

Style and quirks

music

The music of Trailer Park Sex had influences from different styles. While elements of mathcore , metalcore and jazz (as with The Dillinger Escape Plan and War from a Harlots Mouth ) were the focus at the beginning, the style of music changed more and more from groove metal (as with Lamb of God or Pantera ) to Direction of Djent and Alternative Metal (like Periphery , Northlane , Incubus and Deftones ). There were also influences from alternative rock and grunge (such as Faith No More , Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots ).

The band commented on their style of music u. a. as follows:

"We are not affiliated to any kind of trendy shit, we don't play a specific genre of music and we are not trying to be cool for you. On the other hand we stand against racism, fascism and 100% for animal rights and equality. "

“We don't belong to any current garbage, we don't play any particular genre of music and we don't try to be cool for you guys. On the other hand, we are against racism , fascism and 100% for animal rights and equality . "

- Trailer Park Sex : Profile of the band on Facebook

A special feature of the band was that with Lea Swetlana, the drums are occupied by a woman, which is rather rare, especially in rock and metal .

Texts

The lyrics dealt with these as well as with socially critical and social topics and were mostly written in English, but partly also in Italian and Spanish.

DIY ethics

Since its inception , the band has managed itself, both in the artistic area (artwork, video editing, textile finishing) and in the business area (booking, promotion). She was one of the prominent representatives of the national DIY scene; For example, reviewer Frank Engelhardt from FUZE Magazine saw the band as a “prime example of DIY”.

Since 2014, the band has been an integral part of the annual Wacken Foundations offer at Wacken Open Air with a DIY textile printing workshop . In 2017 they participated with this workshop (also on the side of the Wacken Foundation ) at the Hamburg Metal Dayz and the Reload Festival .

reception

After the release of their debut EP Now or Fucking Never , Trailer Park Sex received some attention; Among other things, the Ox-Fanzine 2010/2011 brought both a review of the EP by the musicologist Marcus Erbe , who certified the newcomers as “extremely catchy rock music [...] at the highest level of craftsmanship”, as well as an interview afterwards , which in turn Marcus Erbe with Band had led. The online music magazine vampster saw in its review from the beginning of 2011 “professionalism” and “the potential for far more”, while FUZE Magazine reviewed the EP in autumn 2011 (“wrote the hit of the year with 'Got no Candy'”) and included a special CD edition with the booklet as a bonus. At the beginning of 2012 the music journalist Dominik Winter dealt with the band's debut in the magazine Metal Hammer .

At the beginning of 2012, the regional broadcaster Hamburg 1 brought a short TV portrait of the band on the occasion of Trailer Park Sex's participation in Hard Rock Rising , which has since been available as a video on the broadcaster's websites and the Hamburger Abendblatt .

In 2013, the Wacken Foundation , which is committed to promoting hard and heavy metal music and primarily supports talented bands and artists financially, sponsored a CD production by Trailer Park Sex.

The resulting album Struggle and the subsequent North and South America tour received mostly positive reactions and again brought the band some attention, both on a national and international level, for example from Dominik Winter in the magazine Metal Hammer (“Trailer Park Sex belong by far the best that Europe's underground currently has to offer ”), the Spanish-speaking Uruguayan online magazine La Estadea - Rock & Metal Web ( “ únicos y geniales ” , German“ unique and great ”) and in the Spanish-speaking Uruguayan webzine Rise! Metal-E-Zine ( "muy buena interacción, [...] una gran presentación" , German "very good teamwork , [...] a great show"). In the rise! -Webzine also published an interview with the band, while the Spanish-language Uruguayan daily El País published a portrait of the band.

The Internet radio station RauteMusik recently (at the end of 2017) listed more than 20 tracks by the band, most of which were shown on the special-interest channel WackenRadio.com , the official metal radio of the Wacken Open Air Festival.
