action

Cade Yeager is an engineer who started his own business as a less than successful inventor in his barn in Texas. He is on the verge of bankruptcy and has materials for his inventions paid for by his colleague Lucas, who has not received a salary for a long time. His daughter Tessa also lives in his house, and he tries to keep her away from all activities that are normal for young people.

One day he and Lucas visit an old cinema, where he hopes to get cheap materials and items that he can then repair and sell. There he finds an old truck that he buys for $ 150 (paid for by Lucas) and takes it to his barn.

Meanwhile you can see a special unit of the CIA, which mercilessly hunt down Decepticons and Autobots together with a transformer named Lockdown. Many of the Autobots that had previously helped people have now been destroyed and transported away. Lockdown itself speaks of an agreement with the people that must be fulfilled. Neither the head of the CIA nor the government know about this destruction of the Autobots.

Five years after the events in Chicago (→ Transformers 3 ), the government pays the tipster a premium of 25,000 dollars for every dead alien and 100,000 dollars for every living alien.

While the truck is being repaired, Cade notices that it is a transformer and calls Lucas and Tessa over. Both fearfully call for the government to be informed so that the money can be used to pay off the debt. However, Cade is able to convince them to first experiment with the Transformer, which is apparently no longer viable, in order to incorporate this knowledge into his inventions. When he wants to start, however, the Transformer becomes active and turns out to be Optimus Prime. Cade sends Lucas to the hardware store, who, however, calls the government during his absence, which shortly afterwards sends representatives to the yard. It is now clear that Lockdown is primarily targeting Optimus. The house search by the CIA ends without results, but shortly before the march, Cade reveals himself by saying: "The truck was injured." The CIA now realizes that Optimus must be there after all. To get the information about the whereabouts, they threaten Cade with the shooting of his daughter. When Cade does not reveal the location even then, the still severely weakened Optimus Prime reveals himself and a lengthy chase begins. During this escape, Cade meets Shane Dyson, his daughter's friend who, as a racing driver, saves Cade, Tessa and Lucas. However, the latter dies shortly after the escape vehicle is destroyed. During the course of the film, various dialogues develop in which Cade expresses his displeasure with his daughter's secret relationship with Shane.

Now they are on the run from the government. Cade manages to hack one of the CIA drones. This gives him access to images of past operations that were primarily directed against the Autobots. Optimus now calls his remaining Autobots together, but they have disputes among themselves. These quickly subside, however, and a common enemy, namely the human responsible for destroying the Autobots, is identified.

Thanks to the information in the drone, KSI also comes into play. The remains of the Autobots are brought to his research labs and melted down. The group around Cade and Optimus infiltrates the laboratory and finds out that KSI can build its own transformers. Billionaire Joshua Joyce has significantly influenced the research for this. He is also a managing director and gives the impression of an unscrupulous businessman. For his development he needs a certain metal (he calls it transformium ), which does not exist on earth. He therefore melts down other Transformers for his research.

When the Autobots continue to feel provoked, they attack the research laboratory. Joyce then activates his prototypes, one based on the Bumblebee model, the other based on Optimus (called Galvatron). The latter, however, looks much more similar to Megatron, which almost drives Joyce to despair. When the Autobots fight against the two prototypes in the ensuing battle, Lockdown intervenes and takes Optimus Prime prisoner, Tessa also getting into Lockdown's spaceship, because she has hidden in a car on which Optimus was trapped . Galvatron then withdraws, and Lockdown brings Optimus Prime into his trophy collection, a prison filled with various creatures, with the words "your creators want you back". The people have thereby fulfilled their part of the deal with lockdown, whereupon "the seeds" are handed over to the CIA.

The remaining Autobots, Cade and Shane also enter the ship. You manage to both find Tessa and free Optimus from his prison. Fortunately, the prison is in its own spaceship, which can be isolated from the main ship. This enables the Autobots to escape, and Lockdown only realizes in space that Optimus was able to escape.

At the joint meeting point, Optimus Cade reports that he sensed Megatron's presence while fighting the prototype. To everyone's amazement, Brains says that KSI thought Megatron's brain was dead, but it wasn't. Brains translated the data from Megatron's brain for KSI, which is why Galvatron was built according to Megatron's will and accordingly looked more like him than Optimus. He infected all prototypes with the help of the "chromosomes" from his head, which is why they are subject to his will. It turns out that Megatron / Galvatron wants to activate the seeds in the largest city to cyberform the earth like it was in the days of the dinosaurs. Cade warns Joyce about Galvatron by phone, while Joyce moves KSI, including the prototypes, to China, where Cade and the Autobots are also making their way with their spaceship. Once there, various car chases take place, in which James Savoy (the executive director of the CIA's actions against the Autobots) dies. Bumblebee, Hound and Cade (with an alien weapon stolen from the spaceship) try to protect Tessa, Shane and Joshua. Joshua in particular has changed in the meantime and, through the hint from Cade, noticed that Galvatron is actually the thoughts and soul of Megatron. Since KSI has now created 50 new and improved Transformers and these are under Galvatron's control, the Autobots' chances of success are very slim. Optimus Prime then goes to the prison ship, frees some Dinobots and convinces them of his leadership qualities. Provided that these are released after the battle is won, they will join the Autobots. The fight with the KSI Transformers can then be won, but Galvatron or Megatron has already disappeared at this point and promises Optimus that they would meet again on another day since he is now reborn.

Meanwhile, Lockdown is coming back to Earth. His spaceship has a huge magnet with which he attracts all metal and lets it fall back to earth - primarily on people. When he tries to pull Optimus up, he shoots the magnet and destroys the spaceship. While in combat, Lockdown is about to kill Optimus when Cade and friends show up and help him get revenge on Lockdown.

Since the seed creates transformium by converting other matter and thereby unleashing the destructive power of a tactical nuclear weapon, Optimus wants to hide it in space. He flies into space, but first gives the other Autobots the order to protect Cade and his family. Optimus also goes on a search for his creators. Cade finally accepts his daughter Tessa's relationship with Shane.

background

The shooting took place with the newly released, more compact IMAX 3D cameras and began on May 28, 2013 in Utah and continued in Hong Kong and most recently in China. Numerous takes that take place in Hong Kong were shot in Detroit and Chicago was taken as a replacement for a city in the People's Republic of China .

The cast includes four Transformers that have rarely appeared in the franchise before: Drift , a very sensible Autobot who transforms into a blue Bugatti Veyron ; his partner and opposite Crosshair in the form of a green Corvette Stingray; Hound , an Autobot who takes the position of technical specialist and also the antagonist of the film: Lockdown , who can transform into an anthracite-gray Lamborghini Aventador . The so-called Dinobots , including the Dinobot Grimlock , have also been added to the film.

Financial success

The budget of the film was 210 million US dollars . On the opening weekend in the United States, he grossed more than $ 100 million. In China, the revenue was around 90 million US dollars, which makes the film the most successful production from the western world to date.

By November 16, 2014, Transformers: Age of Extinction grossed approximately $ 1.087 billion worldwide. It thus reached first place in the cinema charts in 2014 and is currently number 29 (as of August 8, 2020) of the world's most successful films of all time .

synchronization

The German dubbing of the film was again done by Interopa Film GmbH from Berlin. This time the dialogue book is from Tobias Neumann , while Tobias Meister and Stefan Fredrich directed the dialogue.

Reviews

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung on July 13, 2014 “tears up” the film and writes: “Instead of a good story and psychologically plausible characters, it comes down to a senseless, whacking spectacle. [...] After only half an hour, the film has reached its maximum level of tension. From then on there is only shooting. [...] Surreptitious advertising, which is subordinated to the viewer in almost every scene. "

David Steinitz at Sueddeutsche.de has a similar opinion : “The fourth part of the 'Transformers' series consists mainly of shouting and some sunsets in Texas. The film is a prime example of how Hollywood envisions the future of cinema. [...] A film as if someone were screaming in your face for three hours straight while you were being pushed in a circle. "

Christian Schlüter tries to see something positive at the Berliner Zeitung and writes: “The epoch-making new thing about the 'Transformers' series is that it unites machine and human in an ideal synthesis, which can be called ideal because it is in and with the most common, most revered and coveted article of faith: the car. As a tinny affect cage, it is a single screaming 'Everything will be fine', an undisputed promise of prosperity. "

The critics at cinema.de express their appreciation of the technical implementation and believe that: "Michael Bay staged [the film] as a terrific tricked action show reel". He assesses the plot itself quite critically, because: “Unlike in the previous films, there is no real emotional connection between the humanoid and extraterrestrial heroes. And that is regrettable, as Wahlberg & Co. have created lifelike characters whose entertainment potential is also lost in Bay's pathetic advertising aesthetic look. Unfortunately, this also applies to the long-awaited appearance of the Dinobots, whom Optimus recruits as new allies towards the end. Grimlock and the other prehistoric Robomonsters do not appear as independent characters, but as mere vicarious agents. And so your intervention in the final material battle is only the overkill of the overkill. "

Jan Kahlert from Focus online writes: “In 'Transformers - Era of Doom', director Michael Bay wanted to surpass the three previous films in all areas. He partially succeeded, but mostly in terms of film length. Otherwise there are few surprises - which is not necessarily a bad thing. [...] Conclusion: If it says Michael Bay, there is also Michael Bay, with all the risks and side effects. He stays true to his 'Transformers' line and spices it all up with a dash of 'Fast & Furious', after all, Tessa's friend is a rally driver. How convenient. The Dinobots add a touch of 'Jurassic Park' to the final fight. Nevertheless: Even die-hard fans should get bored with 167 minutes of running time. "
