Union County is a county in the state of New Mexico in the United States . 4,549 people live here. The county seat is in Clayton .

The county is located in the extreme northeast of New Mexico, borders Colorado to the north, Oklahoma and Texas to the east and has an area of 9,922 square kilometers; of which 2 square kilometers (0.02 percent) are water. The county borders the counties in a clockwise direction: Las Animas County, Colorado, Baca County, Colorado, Cimarron County, Oklahoma, Dallam County, Texas, Hartley County, Texas, Quay County , Harding County, and Colfax County .

Two sites have National Historic Landmark status , the Rabbit Ears and the Folsom Site archaeological site . Eleven buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 17, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , the county had 4,174 people. There were 1,733 households and 1,176 families. The population density was less than 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 80.38% White, 0.00% African American, 0.96% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, and 16.00% other races Groups; 2.20% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 35.10% of the population.

Of the 1,733 households, 31.10% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 54.70% were married couples living together, 9.10% were single mothers. 32.10% were not families. 30.00% were single households and 14.90% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.99 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 27.30% of residents under 18 years of age, 6.30% between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.60% between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.10% between 45 and 64 years of age 17.80% were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 97.00 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 96.30 males.
