Union County is a county in the state of New Mexico in the United States . 4,549 people live here. The county seat is in Clayton .

The county is located in the extreme northeast of New Mexico, borders Colorado to the north, Oklahoma and Texas to the east and has an area of ​​9,922 square kilometers; of which 2 square kilometers (0.02 percent) are water. The county borders the counties in a clockwise direction: Las Animas County, Colorado, Baca County, Colorado, Cimarron County, Oklahoma, Dallam County, Texas, Hartley County, Texas, Quay County , Harding County, and Colfax County .

As of the 2000 census , the county had 4,174 people. There were 1,733 households and 1,176 families. The population density was less than 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 80.38% White, 0.00% African American, 0.96% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, and 16.00% other races Groups; 2.20% were from two or more races.
