history
From the 18th century
In 1774 the Margravine widow Maria Viktoria Pauline von Arenberg moved her residence from Baden-Baden to Ottersweier in order to set up a monastery school for Augustinian women choirs in the former residence of the Jesuits . In the convent school, young girls learned skills that they would need as future mothers and teachers .
Ottersweier belonged to the Bühl district for a long time and came to the Rastatt district after its dissolution in 1973 .
Incorporations
The municipality includes the district areas of the formerly independent municipalities of Ottersweier (with the Zinken Hub, Haft, Hard, Walzfeld and Oberhatzenweier), Hatzenweier (Unterhatzenweier), Unzhurst (with the staff municipality of Breithurst), Oberwasser and Zell. In 1936 the municipality of Hatzenweier was annexed to Ottersweier without a municipal council resolution or a referendum, dictated by the then Gauleiter. The same happened with the communities of Oberwasser and Zell; they merged into Unzhurst parish. In the wake of the regional reform in Baden-Württemberg , Unzhurst decided to become part of the Ottersweier community, which took place on January 1, 1972.

Religions
In the course of the 16th century, the margraviate of Baden-Baden had already changed religious beliefs seven times under the princely law in force at the time. In 1622 the strictly Catholic Margrave Wilhelm von Baden came to power, who in turn made use of his rights and returned his hereditary land to the Catholic Church, for the eighth time - Ottersweier has been Catholic since then. Furthermore, there is a regional church and a free evangelical community (Arche Ottersweier) in the village.
